Mr. Justice Cooper is expected to return to Wellington on Friday. Rev. W. E. and Mrs. Bromilow left for Christchurcli by the Maori last night. The Rev. J. Kennedy Elliott left yesterday on' a week's holiday visit to Nelson. Mr. J. Lomas, Chief Inspector of Factories, returned yesterday from the South. Mr. Chapman, of the Union Company's Nelson staff, arrived by the Pateena yesterday. . .. Mr. H. Saint-George, examiner for; Trinity Collego, London, left for Blenheim and Nelson yesterday. Mr. Alex. Gray, of the legal firm of Gray and Jackson, returned from .1 trip to Australia by'the Moeraki yesterday. Mr. H. W. Kersloy, of George.and Kersley, accompanied by his wife, returned from a trip, to' England .by the Moeraki.yesterday. Mr. W. H. Price, of the Union Company's Nelson office, who is on holiday leave, arrived . in the city by the Pateena yesterday, morning. ' A Wairoa Press Association telegram states that Mr. J. P. Backhouse, artist, aged . 63 years, died, suddenly on Tuesday from natural causes. . . , The Rev. I. Jolly, of Paimerston North, was nominated by the Wellington Presbytery yesterday as Moderator 'of the General Assembly next year. It is understood that the Hon. W., HallJones,- Minister for Public Works, will go over tho 'Main Trunk Railway immediately on tho close of the session. The tour of Australia of Miss Maggie Papakura and the Maori Concert Party has been postponed 'for the present, on the advice of Messrs. J. and N. Tait. The Wanganui "Chronicle" . says:—Mr. • Hood, inspector of factories, has received notice of his transference to Auckland. Mr. M'Quarters returns to Wanganui as factory • inspector. ■ Mr. Val. Johnston, assistant general mana« ger of the Union Company, arrives from the South by the Tarawera to-day, and it is expected* ho will go on through to Auckland by that vessel. Lieutenant-Colonel Knight, Provincial Commander of the Salvation Army, returned yesterday from the North. He will spend tho week-end at Hastings, going on from there to Gisborne.. ■ ' Mr. E. S. A. Pearson, local traffic manager of the Union. Compauy, who is on holiday leave, arrived from Sydney by the Moeraki yosterday, and iii the evening left for Lyttelton by the Maori. . .. Mr. Gil. P. Hoskins, lato manager for tho Royal Picture Syndicate at Christchurcli, who has been appointed manager for Mr. Harry Rickards at Perth, .leaves for Sydney en route to the west by to-morrow's boat. Mr'. M. C. Koning, representative in Australasia for the Royal Dutch Patkot' Company, which has inaugurated a steam servica between Melbourne and Batavia, arrived back from the South yesterday morning by -the Maori. Mr. Harold Whittle, son of Mr. Whittle, of tho local staff of the Bank of New Zealand, will act as accompanist to Miss Ada Crosslcy during her Australasian concert tour. At tho conclusion of the trip Mr. Whittlo will act in the same capacity for Melba. Tho Rev. L. Thomson, Presbyterian minister at Carterton, has.been in ill-health for somt tinio past, and his doctor has now ordered two months' rest. Tho Wellington' Presbytery passed a resolution of regret at his illness yesterday, and authorised the Rev. A. T. Thompson (Masterton) to arrange supply. A presentation of a silver teapot was made to Mr. Geo. Foots, a member of the. Thorndon Hockey Club, by Mr. D. Sloane, 011 behalf of tho club, on the occasion of his approaching marriage. Mr. Sloane referred to Mr. Foote's sterling qualities as an individual and as a member of the club. Tho recipient briefly responded; Mr. P.. A. Mrs. Bennett, wife of the Chief Engineer of tho Patea Shipping Company's new steamer Arapawa, now en route to New Zcaland, who was present at the launching of the vessel, arrived back from London by the Athenic. Mrs. Dixon, wife of Captain Dixon, who was also present .it the launching, remained in England a few days longer, and will arrive by tho next boat. Colonel Hammond, who comes to_ New Zealand representing Genural Booth in connection with his emigration schemes, arrived from Auckland ,Yi\,.erday'. Ho will leave to-morrow night for the South, but will bo back in' Wellington next Thursday, leaving on the Friday night for Sydney. Next Thursday night he will give an address 011 India, where lie was formerly in charge .of tho army's work. ;., .
