A SHORT-LIVED STRIKE.

WORKERS AT OTIRA,

A telegram was received yesterday by the Commissioner of Police (Mr. W.Dilinie) from Otira Gorge stating that 30 men had gone on strike at the tunnel works. Mr. Neil M'Lcan, of the contracting firm of Messrs. John M'Lean and Sons, received a telegram yesterday afternoon stating that the strikers were returning to work. Tho oa usc of the brief trouble is explained to be a demand made by the men for an interval for a meal (crib-time) in the six-hours' shift. In wot weather, the men work a six-hours' shift without crib-time, and in lino weather a shift of eight hours, with an interval for refreshment. The wages are 10s. a day. The refusal of the contractors to allow crib-time during tho shorter shift was responsible for the temporary suspension of work.
