LOWER HUTT COURT. A sitting of the Lower Hutt Magistrate's Court was held at Lower Hutt yesterday, Dr. M'Arthur, S.M., presiding. Messrs. Jno. Cudby and T. A. Peterkiu,' J.P.'s, were also on tho bench. John Robinson was charged-with having ridden on the train between Hutt and Wellington on an expired ticket. Guard Williamson gave evidence supporting the charge. Defendant was fined us. with costs 145., in default 48 hours' .imprisonment. Some time later defendant approached the bench), and produced a ticket which he, on being sworn,' stated that he had in liis posscssipn on the occasion, but which the guard refused to accept. Guard Williamson was recalled, and stated that defendant never offered the ticket, and, in addition, the ticket could only have been purchased on the evening of the day mentioned. Eventually, the caso was allowed to stand over till November 2 to give the defendant an opportunity to prove his statement. ■> H. Whitehead, for riding, a bicycle on tho footpath, was fined ss. and costs 7s. F. Bradley was charged with pasting posters on a private fence. The owner did not press the charge. Defendant was ordered to.pay costs. • Geo. Soutkey, for neglecting to send his child to school regularly, was ordered to pay costs. , Mrs. Ledbrook, on a similar charge, was also dealt with in tho same terms. . In the caso Thos.'Burt v. J. li. W. Angerstein, a claim for £6 lGs. Bd., judgment Was given for plaintiff by default, with costs 145., and solicitor's fee 10s. 6d. In the Hutt Valley Hardware Company v. H. Stewart, a claim for £3 12s. Id., judgment was also given for plaintiff by default, with costs ss. In tho judgment summons case, Tlios. M'Grath v. Jeremiah Islierwood, a claim for £5 Is., debtor was ordered to pay before October 19, in default seven days' imprisonment. . Other civil cases were dealt with as follow:—P. Hansen v. W. Cudby, £2 13s. 2d., judgment by default, costs 55.; Peter Hansen v. Laishly Dear, £1 4s. Id., judgiueut by. default, costs os.; Mary J. Kennedy v. Norman Phelps, £4 Is., for plaintiff by default, costs 75.; E. Foist and Co. v. H. Jones, £1 12s. 6d., for plaintiff by default,, costs 55.; Hutt Valley Timber Co. v. J. H. W. Angorstein, £5 7s. lid., debtor ordered to pay on or before October 31, in default seven days' imprisonment; Meyriek and Lawrence v. J. H. W. Angerstein, £9 125., debtor ordered to pay on or before October 31, in default seven days' imprisonment; Tlios. M'Grath v. James Judge, £6 45., debtor ordered to pay forthwith, in default seven days' imprisonment, warrant to be suspended as long as 10s. per month is paid, first payment to be made on • November 2. . The citizens of tho Hutt have decided not to allow the lato postmaster, Xr. J. Price, to depart without some substantial mark of tho good feeling which has alivays existed between themselves and Mr. l'rice. A meeting of subscribers will bo held to-morrow, when it is intended to wish Mr. Price all the good things for tho future and present him with tlie proposed mark of esteem. His Worship the Mayor and a strong committee has., charge of tho arrangements. A pleasant gathering of railway men took place at Lower Hutt Station last week, when Mr. B. O. Pavitt, nssistaiit-'stntionnniß. tor, was presented with a gladstone b.?g and caso of razors by his fellow on thr occasion of retiring from tho Railway Service. A large crowd listened to the Rov.
