Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Blow returned yesterday to Rotorua. Lieutenant-Colonel Hume, Inspector of Prisons, is on. a departmental visit to Auckland. Inspector Ellison left for Mastorton yesterday, and will probably return to town to-morrow night. . Lieutenant Herd left by yesterday morning's express for Hamilton, where he is to act as judge in a band contest. Mr. D. Goslin, who has been a member for Thorndon Swimming Club since its-inception, was elected a life member of the club at the annual meeting last evening. Mr. W. Forbes, who is standing for the Wellington South seat at tho forthcoming elections, has resigned his position as motorman in tho service of the City Corporation. Mr. A. D. Park, who has been for some time past clork in charge of the Public Works Office at Ohakune, on the Main Trunk line, has been promoted to tho position of chief clerk of the Dunedin brancli of that office. Mr. W. W. Bird, Chief Inspector of Native Schools, has returned from a tour of tho Rotorua, Bay of Plenty, 'and North Auckland districts. Mr. Portoous, Inspector of Native Schools, will leavo nest week for tho North of Auckland. Eleanor Rutherford (98 marks out of 100) and Leonard Leary (95 marks) were tho prize-winners in a Shakespeare reading competition for secondary school pupils held at tho Technical • School on Saturday. Good work was also dono by Ethel Gibbs (93 marks), Tossa Reading (87), Frank Aickin (83), Marjory Butler (81), and Nellie M'Carrisou (60). A welcomo is to be accorded to Mr. G. A. Troup on Sunday, Octobor 13, iu conjunction with tho second annual St. John's Bible Class Old Boys' Rally. This will bo followed by a dinner to be held at Godber's on tho following Monday evening. Mr. Troup, who has been on a trip to England for tho benefit of his health, was the founder of tho St. John's Young Men's Bible Class. Miss Thurston, for some time matron of tho Groy River Hospital, Greymouth, left tliero recently to take up tho position of matron at the Christchurch Hospital. Before leaving she received numerous presentation,sas marks of the high esteem in which she was hold by all with whom she came in contact. The presentations included marks of appreciation from the medical fraternity of Greymouth, tho staff of the hospital, and tho pationta of the institution.

Mr. Justice Cooper is expected to return to Wellington from Hokitika to-day. Colonel R. 11. Davies, C.8., InspectorGeneral of the Forces, left for the South by the Maori last night. Leave of absence for the remainder of the session has been granted to Mr. E. W, Alison, M.P. for Waitemata, on account of illhealth. Mr. T. E. Richardson, who recently resigned his position as chief clerk of tho Prisons Department, leaves for London on Thursday by the lonic. It is understood that tho well-known local footballer Kelly has received a good offer to join the St. Helen's club, Lancashire, England, and that he has accepted, and will leavo on October 22. The "Oainaru Mail" understands that one of tho vacant Sub-Inspectorships of Polico is to be offered to Sergeant King, lately transferred from the chargo of tho Oamaru station to Dunedin. A Dunedin Press Association telegram states that, at the presentation of prizes to successful candidates in the Trinity College music examinations, it was announced that Miss Dorothy Cowio had won an exhibition valued at nine guineas, open to candidates in India and tho colonies, and Miss Annio Glasse had won a similar exhibition valued £G 6s. Miss Cowie also won the Plunket medal for tho highest senior honour in New Zealand.
