Tho.latter table shows that the club. distributed £2250 in .. 1879. This amount had increased to £10,105 in 1895, and during the coming season the - amount of £25,300 has been, set down for distribution. '■ Iranui and Effort, wbo'Tvent to -Hastings yesterday in charge of Albert Goodman, are both pretty well. ■ EfTort'has'only been given easy work since the Wellington meeting, but that is the sort of preparation that Whetumarama's sister thnves,'on.: Among the acceptors for the two-year-old Tace at Hastings to-morrow are. a full-brother to Armlet, ti full-brother to Gravitation, and a full-brother to King Billy. ' The result of the two days'racing at Rand- 1 wick bears out two of the arguments raised by New Zealanders recently l rc-turned from Sydney. Firstly,-that ■the--'jumpers- in New South Wales aro .still a., verylbad lot, and secondly, that Mooltan is oiife; of the best, if . not the best, of theLhorses.; racing in Australia at the present time.-i 'V' Soultline,' who oii" the:. Shorts Handicap at Randwick yesterday,-'and? established an 1 'Australasian record for.t.six-iuflohgs, has not ' won a great many races up to,; the present, but ho has always enjoyed, the reputation of ] :being exceptionally speedy up to' six fur- 1 longs. He_ started tv/ico .as, a. .three-year-old, but failed to get on the winning list!' Last season he won two races at .the! Auck- i land Racing Club's spring meeting, and was 1 . once unplaced and Once third at the Ellcrslie' • Easter meeting. Since going, to Australia ■he has won twice out of three starts.' His victory yesterday would'bo very .pleasing-to : followers of; the, sport in the Auckland dis- " tnct.
Another New. Zealand horse to run creditably at Randwick yesterdriy 'was Pilot, who' carried off the" steeplechase. Mr'Wilson'.s horse won a. double at the Grand National meeting among a poor class, but failed in tho Rangitikei Steeplechase last month. He appears to have been in a class by himself-at Randwick yesterday. Last season the First Steeplechase was won by Phaetontis, with Eclair and Haydn in tho places.
Mooltan has now won' the Metropolitan i Handicap two years running.- Last season he only had-to carry the featherweight of 6st. 131b., but this year he was topweight with 9st. 21b. It is a strange-coincidence that last year's .winners of the .Epsom and Metropolitan Handicaps should be successful this year, and that both should succeed with top weight. Mooltan's time for this year's race is just a tick better than when ho won last yeaiv. and-..ho.Vis.: goinß.'-th"e-..rigli't':vWay to proveihis claim: to/.be -Uiled..tbWftst*hah£. dicap;;horse;:itf~Alistralia.'''.^ back I ,he'.'was .bought by-an Indian, spprtsriiaiijthe_ .pricey - being stated:.. as J liko> £2500,, and; 20- per jc.oiit.f of his while m, Australia.-13y Ins victories in- thtf Spring/Stakes, and-Metropolitan-Handicap'lie' has nowpradticallyvpaid r for ;liims«Slf. -- v .w
