Cooper.. An Artistic Entertainment. Miss Sybil Johnson's Rossetti entertainment is to be given this evening at tho rooms of the""Y'.W:C.A',' just' above Pringle's, in. aid of the association's funds. It' sounds- as though it should be a delightful affair.' Miss Johiison is to give a brief sketch of the'life aiicl work of Dainte Rossetti, who though an ugly man to look at, was one of the most picturesque figures in tho art or literary world. Tableaux will be shown representing several of :his best known paintings, and -recitations will be. given from his poems to illustrate the pictures. One of the pictures to be represented is the well-known "'Dfeam of Dante," and all-will be shown agaiiisj; a dark green background,. as was done with, ' the tableaux in the " Queen ■ Summer " entertainment.: . ' •'■' Presentations. Mr. Boal, the leader. of the Young Women's Bible Class at St. John's Presbyterian Church, devotes a great deal of 'time and thought to the. interests of the class, which is one of the most' successful in New Zealand, and there was a large attendance oil Sunday afternoon, when the members of 'the class, taking advantage 'of the fact that it was Mr. Boal's birthday, presented him. with an easy chair as a token of their appreciation and esteem. At the tea, which is always held in the schoolroom after tlie class, there was an unusually large attendance, over a' hundred beiiig present, and a very pleasant time was spent. Miss Iv'oy, who has resigned her position of teacher'of cookory at the. Wellington.Technical School,'was presented on Saturday morning with a handsome manicure set by the members of the teachers' class which she has for long conducted at tho Wellington Training College. , * Miss Irene Ainsley. The ill-luck that attended, Miss Ainslpy's concerts in Wellington has not followed" her out into- the ;provinces. She has in several cases had. record houses for her concerts, and has had numerous requests to return. This she will probably do, as 'she'is . not anxious to get back to England until the winter is over. Miss Ainsley in tends, to give two concerts in. Wellington shortly,..on .her way to tho South.' ■
A Paragraph-Writing Competition. Great amusement was* caused at a party held recently, when the men present were invited "to write descriptions for' The Dominion" of the frocks worn by the.girl guests. It may he said, to tho lasting sorrow of our'readers, that none of those descriptions' have yet reached this olficc. '" One would like to know how many times that ever useful,.word "stuff" figured in-' them. " Dominica " is convinced bylong experience that it is a word without which no man will venture to describe a frock, but armed with it he-will set out boldly enough to give an impressionist sketch of a velvet gown- or a diaphanous robo.
Plunket Nurses. The Plunket Nurse scheme, has progressed remarkably well in Palmerston North (writes our Palmerston North correspondent), and, this is due,' no doubt, in a great measure to the personal '.interest that has been taken by Lady Plunket, who, at different periods, has addressed large gatherings in different parts of the town.. The -Mayoress has also, taken a' keen interest in the schome, and it is duo principally to her efforts that tho membership list has attained its present proportions. With the advent of Nurse Henderson, who has been appointed to Palmerston, iii a few days fresh vigour will be imparted to this most interesting work. Dr. Truby King will-take the opportunity afforded by a forthcoming trip to Auckland to stay in Palmerston' for a couple of ; days and' deliver an address in.connection with tho scheme. The dinner given last year by the Private Nurses' Association was so .successful that many expressed a desire to see -it made an annual function. It has been decided to givo a similar dinner this year' in the Y.W.G.A. Rooms, Lambton Quay, on Tuesday, October 20. ; If the experience of-St. Anne's. Church, Northland, is to be taken as a,test case, tho day of bazaars will be over, for in responso to'the straight-out appeal for-funds which took the placo of any. less' direct way- of obtaining money, the vicar received £51 12s. od.' at Sunday's collections. Mr. Duncan. Matheson, eldest son of' Mr. Duncan Matheson, of Palmerston North, was married to Miss Blanche Gertrude--Wilton, third- daughter of - Mr. A. E.• Wilton, at Levin. Tho Rev. J. White officiated. Mr.' and Mrs. Matheson will spend some time in the South Island, and then take up their residonco at Levin. From tho present posture of affairs and tho comparative length of. strido of tho two countries towards civilization (says Anne Whitney in an American papor),' it would soem possible that Turkey will arrivo at .'the goal of woman suffrage a century before Massachusetts. .
