LAND TRANSFER DEPARTMENT METHODS.
Sir, —From time to time letters have appeared in the Wellington dailies, complaining of the inadequate accommodation at tho Land Transfer Office, 'Wellington, and the inconvenience to lawyers and surveyors who go there to search tho records. This is quite true, but I would point out to the Department a much greater cause for complaint,' and that is the disreputable state that valuable plans are getting into. Original deposited plans are continually being handed over tho counter for tho purposo.of searching, or of making tracings, with the result that some of these plans are fast becoming obliterated, dirty, and unintelligible. ■■ I would urge tho Department to have photographs of all deposited plans , taken as soon as they aro registered, such photographs show every figuro and lino clearly, also any marks of erasure, they aro a facsimile copy and are a sure check against future tampering with plans. An alternative scheme would be to havo tracings made and mounted of all deposited plans, and these could be handed over the countcr as guaranteed true copies of tho originals. Tho Guard Books are also in a bad way, and want renewing. Trusting that something will be done to preserve plans which are invaluablo as original records. —I am, etc., KAI RTJRI. September 30.
