SUICIDE AT EVANS BAY.
BUILDER SHOOTS HIMSELF. FINANCIAL TROUBLES THE CAUSE. ' A married man named Charles John Bartlett, 60 years of age, committed suicido at his residence, Farm Road, Evans Bay, on Saturday evening. It appears that, after tea, Mrs. Bartlett went into town, leaving deceased in chargo of five of tho younger members of their family." About 7.30 o'clock, deceased, who had been rea.ding a paper, went out of the house. .. As lie did. not return the older children searched the house. Afterwards, ■whilst they wore looking around tho yard, their mother returned, and they informed her that deceased could, not be found. Mrs. Bartlett subsequently .went, into a workshop a| the rear of the house. . she, found hisr husband sitting on,a box with a revolver at his feet and blood 'flowing from his mouth. Dr. Makgill,/"who resides in the vicinity, found tha.t life was extinct. Further examination, disclosed tho fact that a bullet had entered tho roouth and, proceeding in an upward direction, lodged in the brain. An inquest was held yesterday by Dr. M'Arthur, S.M., without a jury. This wa,s the first inquiry under tho new Act which only recently came into force. In the course of her evidence, Mrs. Bartlett stated ,that her husband, who was a builder, had been, depressed lately owing to financial worries. The coroner came to the conclusion that deceased died as a result of a gun-shot wound self inflicted whilst in a state of-. temporary insanity arising from financial troubles.
