MEETING OF COUNCIL. TJie No-License Central Council met last evening, the Rev. W. J. Williams presiding. Arrangements wero made for the visits of two popular No-License lecturers 'due in Wellington tliis month. The Rev. L. M. Isitt will hold a five days' mission, the special feature of which will be a drunkards', procession at closing time on Saturday night, and the Rov. H. H. B. Hammond will hold a three, days' mission, commencing on October 27. ...... ' An interesting letter from , the Local Option Polls Committee was brought under the notice of tho council, and referred to Mr. A. R. Atkinson.. Lotters were received from Ashburton, bearing" on a trade . advertisement • which quoted the letter of a boy's mother. • It was resolved to publish the letters in Saturday's papers. . - ■ A resolution was passed that the attention of the officer of the Salvation Army in command of this district bo directed to the. statement which is being circulated through the press, implying that General' Booth' is opposed to tho No-License movement, and that tho Salvation Army be. requested to take prompt steps to refute this statement. . Tho Rev. W. J. Comrio moved, and Mr. W. J. Helyer seconded:—.'.'That, the ministers of "the city and" suburban churches .be requested t^'fp'reach.iat/an early date on the duty of citizens with reference to tho approaching local option poll, and that ministers and office-bearers of congregations bo asked to forego as far as, possible all weeknight meetings between this and tho dato of the poll, so that all possible energy may be devoted to No-License .work." The motion was adopted. .. : Astonishment was expressed. that despite tho near approach of tho poll the figures for drunkenness continued to increase in the city. . Ono hundred and. sixty-eight charges of drunkenness wore the record for September, being an increase of 45 over tho previous month. In addition, there were tho following cases' . connected with liquor Ten charges of being drunk and disorderly, four of broach of prohibition order, four of obscene language, _ two of _ indecency, and one of theft. Five prohibition orders were issued, and there was one attempted suicide, and ouo death from acute alcoholism.
