MIRAMAR BOROUGH COUNCIL.
THE BETTERMENT SCHEME. Tho fortnightly meeting of the Miramar Borough Council was held last evening, there being present: The Mayor, Mr. C. J. Crawford (in tho chair), and Councillors M'Lcod, Bell, East, and Cooper. The Mayor reported on the arrangement with the Harbour Board in connection with the reclamation of Evans Bay. The question had been thrashed out from every point of view, and the agreement was an absolutely equitable one. It had been said that the council or the board had got the better of the deal, but he was inclined to think that it was perfectly oven. Tho council required shipping and street facilities, and the payment of £5000 would make an absolute success of the whole scheme, and ho hoped the Bill would pass. He would like to express his appreciation of tho work done by his coworker Councillor Bell. The work was very arduous, and ho had received great assistance. He also desired to thank Mr. Devine, tho council's solicitor. Councillor M'Leod said that the agreement reflected great credit on both committees. The under-secretary of Public Works informed the council that he had received a satisfactory report from the Inspecting Engineer (Mr. C. R. Vickerman) as to the construction of the modified line of the MiramarSeatoun tramway from the junction of Ira Street with Tiotio Street along . Broadway Street for about twenty chains, and it could therefore be used for traffic forthwith. Tho Finance Committee asked authority to make_ the necessary arrangements for the flotation of the water supply loan. In moving that the necessary authority bo given, the Mayor stated that tho question, was the continuation of water supply and sewerage. It was proposed to make arrangements now so that they would be sure of getting £20,000 of the £23,000 authorised by the ratepayers. If tho Finance Committeo made this- arrangement, ifc would take fifteen months before the whole amount would bo called up; when the tenders would be accepted. Councillor Bell seconded, and remarked that the work was necessary, and there was nothing to be gained by holding it over. The Mayor remarked that there was a total amount of £5866 unexpended . from the £21,000 street improvement loan, showing that the council was well within its estimate. The required authority was given. Permission was given Mr. D. K. Blair to remove gravel at Seatoun at a payment of one shilling por yard. The' Borough Engineer (Mr. R. E. Bennett) reported on the improvement of Brandon, Dundas, and Hector Streets. He also reported that the cost of the electric lighting of Miramar Avenuo would be about £45, including tho'cost of automatic switches. The cost of current' was estimated at £11 per annum. The reports were adopted. The accounts passed for payment were: — District fund, £186 13.; and improvements loan account, £773 Bs. Bd. The bank balance was stated to be £644 6s. sd.
