Cardcn Party at Karorl. A delightful garden party was given yesterday afternoon by Mrs. C. J. Johnston'at her beautiful homo at, Karori. Tea was served in. tho summer house by the croquet lawn, where some of tho guests played .cronuet while tho othors strolled about the garden, arid .'a hand stationed on tho terrace by the lawn played music that accordcd. well with tho charm of the garden, where lots of spring flowers wore iri bloom. Mrs. Johnston wore a handsomo grey dress and a, long coat of face cloth of, a rich cherry colour, which made a fino note of colour against the green of grass and trees. ' Her hat was trimmed with lilac and a 'big white osprey. Miss Doris Johnston was in pale champagne coloured voile trimmed with beautiful embroidery; Lady Ward, painted chiffon frock and black picture hat"; Mrs. Newmaii in black with black hat tririimed with brown and pale rose colour; Mrs. A. Duncan, white frock :worn with navy blue coat that was relieved with touches of, red and. gold; Mrs. Tuson, brown costume; Mrs. Head, blue frock and hat to match; Miss Coates, black dress and long grey-coat; Mrs. Fitzgerald; pale grey frock'with hat to match; Mrs. RankineBrown, brown costume embroidered: with blue; Miss Joseph, champagne-coloured frock with touches,of rose-coloured.embroidery, and rose : coloured hat; Mrs. Fyler,, blue and white' foulard. School .is : always an in- , -terestirig display, and as far, as tho girl members of. the school are concerned a very charming,one. The stage covered with-young girls, somV of vthem .very little, young girls, in pretty-dark serge costumes effectively relieved with -collars/.and bands of ,pale blue, ;' all "moving rhythmically to gay music'/is a sight /worth :goiftg , to//.see, and the audience evidently- fully appreciated it. Right at the end of the evening tho girls camo on again with Indian clubs'glittering with red and blue and ' yellow/shininess, and with 'these they 'did some very pretty exercises, exercises that ivould no doubt have looked simple enough with, dull', wooden .clubs, though with the brightly coloured clubs one got a blurred impression of tossing arms and Hake's of coloured light. While they were gaily at work, suddenly three of tho scenery'" flats at one side swayed, and fell to the ground with enough'deliberation to let the girls nearest to them spring out of the' way,, but noisily enough to be'alarming. The youngster's'were frightened, but there was not even a squeak from itliem, and-before tho spectators quite knew what was happening,' the leader was back in her place again, swinging .her clubs as unconcernedly as possible, and "a minute later oven, the tiniest were following her example, while the audience .loudly applauded their, nerve., A Farewell Tea. . ii' Miss Maclean, who, has been in .charge of Messrs. George and George's millinery department, is leaving next week for- Fiji, where she'is to be married, and on Wednesday a very enjoyable "At Home" was given in her honour by Mr.. L. George at- Karori. The rooms : were'filled: with , flowers, and the tea-table. effectively decorated with- daffodils arid anemones. ' Several of the guests-gavo 'songs and-recitations. Mrs. George wore a frock of flowered voile.with lace trimming, and Miss Maclean's handsomo, dress was of blue chifl'div'-'taffe'ta§u of cream lace, hat'* with ■; "plumes. 'Tho firnK W§#a^§iblf silver ."tea\ service,, and the gift of the employees consisted of several articles of silver, including' ..a /cake/basket, and large. .toilet - scent bottle in cut'glass a.nd silver. . Johnson, vicar of St. Marks, -presided., Miss Leslie is doing deputation, work for. the Church Missionary Association, and is devoting some months to delivering addresses at variousplaces' and endeavouring to, raise funds for the missions. ' At the Presbyterian. Church, on Wednesday .afternoon, Mr. Donald William Mathieson was married to Miss.- Blanche Gertrude Wilton, eldest daughter"; of Mr. and Mrs. A. E. .Wilton, of Levin. After tho ceremony, which was performed by Rcy. J. White, a reception was held in the Century Hall, when a great number of guests were present. , ■ On Wednesday, at the residenco of Mr. J. H. Brooks,, an old and well-known resident of Ohingaiti, his eldest daughter, Miss Floronce Mary Brooks, was married to Mr. William Arthur Dingle,-, second son of Mr. R. Dingle, of Stratford. The bride, was given away by her father. Sir. W. H. Brooks, ot the .Telegraph Department, Wanganui, was best man, and the Misses Brooks were bridesmaids. The . Rev.. J. Blackburne,. of Hunterville, officiated. After the ceremony the guests, who included members of both ; families and a few old friends' of the -bride and bridegroom,' were entertained at a wedding breakfast,.-which- was served in a marquee erected en- the- grounds. The' programme' was arranged. by Miss Adelinb Toler-Curtis,. assisted': by Mrs. Rigg, Slisses Daisy/and .Ella Hurley, Violet Mailer, Toler-Curtis, and Brune. At tho recital to be given by Miss Flardirige-Maltby and Mr. Leo Buckeridge, Miss \Maltby Will give a number of recitations which have been arranged, by her to music; and Sir. Eric Lyon will also recite. A number of Sir. Buckcridge's pupils will take part in the entertainment, among them Mr. Reginald Blow, Sir. Stuart Slaclean, Mr. Cyril Biundoll, and Sliss Nora NatuSch, who is a promisihg young contralto. Sir. Bucke- . ridge himself will sing several songs.
