HOW NOLICENSE "SAVES"

A pathetic letter. • ( ' Mr.' H. Daws, Mayor" of Ashburton, after hearing of drunkenness at''the Ashbufton Magistrate's Court- last week, stated that there seemed to be'a good.deal-ofvdrink-ing going" on during Sundays,' judging from the number of persons "brought before the Court on Mondays on charges' of inebriety. He intended to tfo his utmost to-discounten-ance the habit, and offenders brought .before him in future for drunkenness on a Monday morning would be "severely dealt .with. A Mother's Complaint. If any cvidenco of the truth of his-Wor-ship's statement were'needed it is supplied by the following pathetic letter, - addressed -to the" editor of the Ashburton •'Guardian,'.'and published in. that journal on September 19. . 1903:— .." ." • Sir,-^Kindly• give me space in your paper, and, vwith", your permission, to "answer the remarks of '.'Silver .Pen" regarding" Sunday driiiking. ■■ When Mr.-Davis snid in the; Court that there was, a-good'deal of drinking going' on on Sundays he spoke the > truth; Now, sir, I will give you my experience of Sunday drinking. It was iny. son that was before the Court last Monday; that is the.second time that the police have run niy boy .in on a Sunday. It is six years ago since my boy came into Ashburton from Tinwald to* learn his trade. 'He-was then 14 years old, and ho had never tasted intoxicating drink up to thon. He is now twenty years old, and ho has been up before tho Court twice for drunkenness.. Once,l sent'for the police, and had a slv-grog shop raided on a Sunday, When my boy was there" all tho day.; and how many time lie has boen brought home to .me drunk; I could not tell you—numberless. And all this takes place, in the No-License town i of Ashburton. Now, sir, I will give you my boy's own words about the sly-grog shops'of L Ashburton. "When : he-.camo home on Monday I asked him if he would tell me where he , gets the drink-from. He'said, No; but he said lie could get ,drink at. forty places inAshburton; and my boy is worse on Sundays than ■'any'-other-day in tho week. Tho NoLicense people will say far better twenty or thirty sly-grog shops than one licensed 'bar. Shame ori- them. - Thdy have not been put to the test the same ,as I have, or they would not talk like that,, for tho sly-grog shops are a curse to Ashburton. No doubt the NoLicense people think tlioy are'doing a grand' thing for tho young people, and I glory in their efforts, but they would be doing a far better thing if they would advocate No License No Liquor., I have been wishing that someone far abler than I. am would have' taken-this matter up. Thanking you kindly, I am — ' THE BOY'S MOTHER. - HARD FACT. "We may not save the old toper, but we do save young men from temptation," is a constant Prohibition cry. Here is at least one mother who has reason to curse tho day she brought her son to a No-License district. And she is only one of many. When will the people learn not to be gulled, by platitudes, but to be guided by stubborn facts? ' ' ' C 905

Perhaps she's on the railway! , Perhaps she's on tho sea! Perhaps she'll go I To Jericho, Perhaps she will! Perhaps she won't, But-if'she-'does'or if she don't, . I'm Klad that I presented to her. : A bottle of Woods' Great Peppermint Curo. 20 I . Love-making is tho grand staple of poetry, ' drama, and fictipn; but in life it is the most 1 annoying of all phenomena.—" Saturday 1 Evening Post," Philadelphia.
