BRITISH BUTTER MARKET.
. The, high- rates, which butter now commands in the, English market (says "The Dairy," England, of August 15) have; attracted supplies; from all available sources, and during the past few weeks enormous quantities have been -imported from Denmark, Siberia, France, and Sweden. .The imports for, each week in July showed'a marked increase over the preceding week; while for tho week ending July 25' a record was established-with a total of 109,000 cwt.', as comparedMvith 90,000 cwt. for-the corresponding seven days in 1907. . : [ " The high, rates for .butter which have prevailed on the market have been due to' the'shortage'of imports during tho winter and summer," said a /leading authority on the London produce market, "but if the present heavy supplies continue, it is only natural that prices will decline. The exports of butter and eggs from Siberia are steadily increasing, and before, vory long those supplies will have a great effect upon our •markets. We know now, somewhat late, that Siberia, in the main, is a smiling, sunny land or plenty, and its export possibilities during the, summer months, when the Baltic is open, are almost boundless. Our autumn and winter, oil the other hand, are the export periods for:' Australia and New Zealand."
