i PETONE BOROUGH COUNCIL. 1 The fortnightly meeting of the Petone ; Borough Council was held last evening. There were present:—His Worship tho Mayor (Mr. J. W. M'Ewan), and Councillors Cole,, Short, i Lodder, Colquhoun, Castle, Young, and Dr. ■ Harding. 1 i Correspondence was received from tho secretary of the Petono Football Club, backing up the application of the Wellington Rugby , Union for the Rccreation Ground for next season; and also pointing out that Petone has seventy-five players taking the field every Saturday, and many of them cannot afford to travel to Miramar. A deputation from tho Rugby Football Union consisting of Messrs. Brown (chairman), Murray, and Hardham waited on the council. Mr. Brown pointed out. that the Rugby Union had always acted fairly- to tho council, and asked the council to grant the use of ground on the same terms as last year. Mr. Hardham also spoke in favour of the Rugby Union having the ground. His Worship the Mayor moved that Councillors Lodder, Smith, Short,' Cole, and tho movor be a conimittee to go. into the matter, with the engineer, and report to the council within a month. Councillor Castle seconded, and the motion was carried. Considerable discussion took place in connection with the ap- ' plication of the Rugby Union for the Recreation Grounds. 1 Councillor Lodder moved that a fixed sum should be charged, or tenders should be called, for the Rccreation Grounds, and pointed out that if the Rugby Union could , go to Mirannr and pay £300 a year they might pay a fair amount for tho Potone grounds. Councillor Cole thought so-many grounds should be placed at the disposal of Petone Rugby and Association clubs. The matter was eventually held over, pending the report of tho, committee appointed. A letter was received from the secretary of. tho Potone Citizens' Brass Band asking tho council to erect gas jets in the band rotunda on the Recreation Ground as promised long ago. The band would then commence giving open-air concerts during tho summer months. The band will bo informed that the work is included in tho engineer's scheme, and will be attended to. The borough engineer (Mr. W. H. Cook) announced that the creek known'as Percy's Creek had been diverted into a culvert having an outfall into the sea as per resolution passed by the council. A telegram was read from Mr. T. M. Wilford stating that the. Tramway Bill had passed the Local Bills Committee with amendments; and also a letter from Messrs. Bunny, Petoriek, and Ayson that the above Committee had struck out all .the betterment elausos, also tho provisions as" to salary, of the chairman, the remuneration of members, and unauthorised expenditure. The. destructor is not allowed because tho boroughs can combine under the Municipal Corporations Act to do it. The provisions as to limiting tho board's liability to passengers in case of accident is struck out, as well as the power to take, land for a recreation ground. His Worship moved that tho letter and telegram bo received. This was carried. Tho Petone Working Men's Club made application for the Recreation Ground, for Saturday, October 3, for the purpose of playing a football match with the Junior Club, and proposed making a charge of 6d. admission (ladies free), the proceeds to go to a member of the club who has been laid"up in tlie hospital'for some months. The request was granted. ..' Tho .Minister for Lands wrote acknowledging... the receipt of/a letter in reference to the drainago;'scheme;; informing :the coun.cil that-the CeriartmentMs waiting for a report' from -. the Commissioner' of Crown Lands.' ..The-letterwas received. . The council received, tho following tenders for scrubber boardsUdy and - Co.. £60 18s. Gd.: Lowin and Bull. £60 155.; Watey Sibun, £57 (accepted). The engineer's estimate was £59. The tender of F. E. Millar (£3O 12s. 9d.) was accepted for fencing the sanitary depot, 31* chains post and wire. Tho engineer's estimate was £38. : - _ Councillor Colquh'bun moved that the council meet at 8 o'clock'during the summer Councillor Younc seconded, and it was decided to start on November 1. LOWER HUTT BOROUCH COUNCIL. A DIFFERENCE WITH PETONE. Previous to the ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Hutt Borough Council last night a special meeting was held. The Mayor (Mr. T. A. Peterkin) was in the chair, and Councillors Baldwin, Ward, Judd, Ross, Hughes, Wildsmith, Hodgins, and • O'Sullivau. The business of the meeting was the consideration of a motion of Councillor Hodgins that steps be taken to raise a loan of £3000 for tho erection of gasworks, and that the first year's interest be 'paid out of loan. The motion was carried. The ordinary meeting then proceeded. Correspondence was. read from the Public Trustee for £408 155., interest paid. . Tho Petone Borough Council forwarded a cheque for £16 17s. 3d., being the council's proportion of Mr. account for preparing plans regarding tramway ' district, and enclosing an account from Messrs. Martin and Atkinson for £4 ss. in reference to the HuttGolf Club, and asking the council to forward a cheque for one-half of the account, viz., £2 2s. 6d. Tho matter was referred to tho Petone Borough Council for adjustment. Messrs. Bunny, Potherick, and Ayson wroto with reference to Tramway Bill. The . letter was received. < t The Commissioner of Crown Lands wroto stating that ho-liad received a petition from residents of Noriuaudale., in which thai? complained that the use of the quarry (Section 94) by. the council causes great inconvenience on account of the road, approaching it being kept in such bad repair, and intimating that unless proper maintenance of the approaches is provided for ho will havo to countermand the permission to use the Quarry.; It was resolved to invite a representative from the Lands Board to go over tho route with a council roprosontativc. PrevioijS to the minutes being confirmed Councillor Ross drew attention to an article appearing in the evening paper with regard to the position of the various bodies in reference to the proposed new bridge. This statement, emanated' from Mr. Hl'Ewan Mayor of Petone, who in effect, ho said' charged the council with "cheek," and other unworthy attributes' The article, coming as it did from the Mayor of Petone, should bo refuted officially. He (the speaker) considered that the action imputed to this council should bo further inquired into by the council as a body. Ho moved: ' j .'.'That this council regrets that the Mayor of Petone should have so far forgotten the dignity of his position as to cause to bo published a statement which is a perversion of fact and insulting to the members of this council, and that a 1 copy of this resolution be forwarded to ' tho Petone Borough Council." • Councillor Ward seconded, and said ho \ thoroughly supported all said by the provious speaker. I Several other members of the council fully i agreed with tho remarks made, and the ; motion was put and carried unanimously. 1 | Messrs. O. and R. Beere wrote regarding i tliq Fitzberbcrt Estate. This referred to 1 the taking over 'of roads, drainage deposits ! and repairs to roads. The engineer reported ' that all the items were well within- tho < amounts ananged with the estate.
The Wellington Rugby Union wrote enclosing a cheque for £2 Ss., being 10 per cent, of the takings in the Kin Ora-Petone football match. The letter was received The Hawthorn Cricket Club, asked for aii extension of the water pipe to their pitch ■as previously applied for. This was granted! With reference to tho application of the New Zealand Rugby Union for a lease of the Recreation Ground for the ensuing year, it was resolved, on the motion of: Councillor Hodgins, that tho report be referred back to the committee. . (2) Now Zealand Rugby Football Uub s application for ground: That the application of the New Zealand Rugby Football Club (Northern Union League) for tho Recreation Ground for the next sea son be not entertained. . Tho report was referred back to the committee for reconsideration. PURITY OF THE BALLOT. A meeting was hold in tho Oddfellow's Hall on Sunday evening to consider tho question of lio-v to obtain a purity of ■ the ballot. A considerable number of people at. • tended. The Mayor, Mr. M'Ewan, was in tho chair. Mr. Piper moved' that every' canUidate should be asked if he would sup- : port legislation' that would make tlie'-misre-.: presenting in any-way: against or for any • question on the ballot paper, a criminal offence. Mr. Piper then spoke, with "regard to his motion giv.ing several instances of alleged deception since last election. Rev. A. Thomson seconded tho motion, which was carried. A committee was then formed for the purpose of forwarding.the,proposal. -It consisted of Messrs. M'Ewan, Nicholson Piper, Dillon, Barnett, Lockwood, and-Wat., kins, Revs. Wilson, Rothwell, Williams,' Metson, Thomson, and Keay. ; Mr. Townsend took exception to the- No-License-' League hot being represented on the committee. Mr. Piper said the No-License • League had its hands full; PETONE POLICE COURT..' The .following cases ,came before Messrv ' M'Ewan, Inglis, and, Cole, 'J.IVs, at the Petone Court yesterday:— , H. Sharon was charged with behaving in a violent and offensive manner , in. a railway carriage. Accused, who was defended by Mr. Wilford, pleaded not guilty and'called several witnesses who stated that'he was struck by a man in tho'carriage and asked someone to. hold tho man-in a seat, and then went out of'!;' the carriage to avoid further trouble.' The'.; case against Sharon was then dismissed. > ' T. Campbell and W. Hanford were' fined ' ss. with costs ,75., in default 24' hours','im-'! prisonment,. for trespassing on the railway • line. ■ F. W. Pointon, for boarding a train whilst in motion, was convicted and ordered to pay 7s. costs, in default 12 hours!, imprisonment. J. Pointon, for not registering, a dog) was convicted and ordered to; pay costs,/ 75., in default 12 hours' imprisonment. •' The following . cases went to plaintiff, .by. default:—Robert Corson v. F. '.The main feature was an address by the secretary, '■ Mr. Thos. Townsend, advertised as "The Trade: Its Tactics: An Exposure." The speaker spoke ' for a considerable time, and dealt with numerous official returns and reports.
