MR. ADAM COWAN, THEATRICAL MANAGER. (BI TZLEORAPH—ruuss ASSOCIATION—COPTKIGUT.) Sydney) September 28. Mr. Adam Cowan, tho well-known theatrical manager, is dead. The causo of death was pneumonia. Mr. Adam Cowan, whoso death is reported from Sydney,. w»h the most uritheatrical of theatrical men, and looked it. lie first came under notice in this country as advance representative nnd' manager for Mr. E. S, bmythe, whose business consisted of organising lecture and concert tours for well-known people, and . through whose agency we in New Zealand were able to hear Mark Twain; Mr. H: M. Stanley, Mr. Max O'Rell, Madame Patey, Miss Von Finklestein/ the Rev. Haweis, and other notable # people. After Mr. Pmytho. practically retired from the business, or before that time, Mr. Cowan Ucame associated with Mr. L. J. Lohr, father of Mis? Marie Lohr, tlie successful. London ' aotress. Occasionally he worked for Mr. ,T. C. 'Williamson, but for four of five years he has been associated with Mr. Edwin Geach in most of the latter manager's ventures. Ho was last hero a fow weeks ago as manager of the Prank Thoriiton Comedy Co., a position lie was fulfilling when ho died. Quiet and-unostentatious, studious, and, perhaps, a little reserved, Mr. Cowan did not make friends readily but those who came to know him intimately soon learned, to lovo the big awkward shy ii'an., If is said that no one had such a minate knowledge of Australasia from a theatrical' point of view as Adam Cowan—he knew railway distances, truck freights, steamer rates, .hall lessees and proprietors, and time-tables in every State, and it has been stated that he has never yet been floored by a sudden inquiry. For some time past ho has had a home in, Christchurch, where Mrs. Cowan has resided.' Mrs. Cowan was summoned to Sydney.by cable last week, and was to have left Auckland for Sydney by the steamer which left there yesterday. The deceased, who left no family, was about 48 years of ago. ...
