Hearst has published additional letters showing that eminent Republican and Democratic politicians tendered thoir legislative services to financial corporations upon a basis of financial support. The disclosure's have evoked frantic ox-, prcssions" of public disgust. Senator Foraker has' declared that Mr. Taft, Republican candidate .for the ; Presidency, consorted with the Standard Oil Trust magnates. Senator Foraker also declared tha.t President Roosevelt's since the charges wero, made indicates that he has a guilty conscicnce. , The Democrats accuse Mr. Cornelius Bliss, Treasurer of the Republican National party, with having levied on behalf of Mr. G. B. Cortelyou, chairman of the Republican National Committee and Secretary of the Treasury, a contribution of £20,000 sterling upou Messrs. H. H. Rogers and John D. Archbold (representing the Standard Oil Trust) on tho understanding that the Administration would act less harshly towards 1 corporations. The Democrats a,dmit that President Roosevelt directed the committee to "return this money, but they state that the monoy was spent nevertheless, and that a little later the Standard Oil Trust was requested to furnish £50,000 more. ' This.' request Mr. Rogers declined, intimating that he had never received : back tho £20,000. He accnsed ; President Roosevelt of knowing that the sum was not only accepted, but waiS used.
