Fijr some time past the Agricultural 'Department has been preparing to embark upon farm experimental work on a much moro comprehensive scale than has been possible under the managements existing in the past. The Minister Btated that'up to tho present the work , for the whole of New Zealand had been undertaken by Mr. Bayliss, but the increased requirements had grown beyond his individual efforts, and so it was decided that Mr. Bayliss should tako charge of the field experimental work in the Ivorth Island. Tho results did not prove satisfactory, and so wo proposo to conduct tho experiments ourselves and get into touch with farmers, unions of farmers, aiid any other organisation which will carry on plot experimenting, seed testing, etc., throughout their districts. We arrango with certain farmers to provide the land and the labour, the Department supplying tho manure and seeds, and tho experiments being carried out under the supervision of our officers. The results will bo incorporated with the Departmental reports, but in order that the information mav be immediately available we intend issuing bullotins from tirao to time detailing tho results of particular tests. It is probable that noarly all our experimental work will bo dealt with in this manner shortly." Mr. Macpherson will be succeeded lioro as inspector of dairies by Mr. Sounness, who has had wido experience and until lately was in chargo of a. largo dairy factory near Hawora. According to the Minister, Mr. Sounness has exceptional ability in that direction in which his sorviccs arc to be utilised, and was specially selected by Mr. Clifton for tho position ho is shortly to occupy.
