Mr. J. G. W. Aitken, M.P., who has been suffering from another acuto attack of lumbago, with a touch of sciatica, was sufficiently recovered yesterday to bo ablo to got up for a littlo while. Mr. R.. M'Kenzie, Chairman of Committees of tho House of Representatives, received a cablegram yesterday from Plockton, Ross-shire, Scotland, announcinig tho death of his mother, at tho ago of 87. At tho Dominion Day celebrations in Mastorton the Mayor presented to a scholar named Jack Hunter the Royal Humane Society s certificate for bravery. Young Hunter last summer saved a comrade from drowning in the Ruamahauga River, a young Ming drowned on the same occasion. J, he lad_ was heartily cheered' on receiving the certificate. _ The Rev.. W. E. Bromilow and Mrs. Bromilow, Methodist missionaries from New Guinea, arrived in Wellington on Saturday, and will go south on October 7. Having resigned their work m New Guinea owing to tho effect of the climate on Mrs. Bromilow's health, tlicy were invited to New Zealand by the Methodist Conference. 'They are travelling through the Dominion, advocating that funds should bo provided "to send missionaries to India, whence the coolies come ? a ' so ra i sin g funds for the purchase of two up-to-date auxiliary schooners for Now Guinea and tho Solomon Islands, at a total cost of £2000. The Mission Board has consented to tenders being called for these craft in New Zealand if a sufficient proportion of the money is raised here. Mr. and Mrs. Bromilow will address several meetings iu Wellington. ' ■
