Writing of the Mangahao Valley, our travelling correspondent says:—lt was very remarkable to notice how low all the rivers and creeks are for'the season of the year. : There has not'been anything like the requisite amount of rainfall to ; see us through another dry season: In the valley of the Mangahao the settlers are an industrious ,lot: many, acres are being stumped and got into 'crops _of' one sort or another. I saw several farms on which the owners were busy .stumping and logging up, while on others, where paddocks have already been- cleared and are now in grass', they present a pleasant contrast to the wilderness. of logs and stumps elsewhere. Dairymen in Mangahao are finding out that they must grow something besides grass'for their stock. Some grow . carrote, others mangels, others oats, and so on. In any case, they find that they must have something to" supplement the ordinary -feed, iand'many are realising nbw that the'two months when there is the greatest scarcity are .August and .September., - ~
