BONED BEEF IN CLASCOW
DUMPING ALLEGED. . There , is/something''', most discreditable about the trade in boneless.beef in Glasgow (says a correspondent of . the'" Meat Trade Journal"). Some time ago a report'was made to the Local Government Board by.; its medical officer on the subject of borieioss beef. The report stated that this particular import was sold principally in the northern towns of England and; in ' Glasgow- where there was a large demand for it. 'Whether this statement has had the effect of making Glasgow the dumping ground for brands of inferior and doubtful quality I can't say, but certain ;it is that recently a large number iof seizures of, this class of meat have been made by Mr. Trotter and his staff. Scarcely a week passes but great quantifies of boneless beef are seized in tho cold stores and condemned as unfit for' food. It is surely a scandalous state of affairs that- Glasgow should ba looked upon as the forlorn hope of importers who'-bavo diseased or "putrid meat to dispose ofi, or, rather, get rid of, at any price." A curious circumstance in connection wjth. some of these'seizures is, I am informed, that owners bo, found for the meat when the inspectors come, across it. Strange, isn't it; that tto cold stores people do hot know to whom they are to look tor payment of .storage charges? "Oh, the msuranco company," say some; but surely, someone must hold the policy? These cold' Btores are in some respects mysterious places. ...
