LORD MORLEY'S FACTS ABOUT THE . WORLD'S SHIPPING. Distributing prizes on board the training ship Worcester, Lord Morlfiy gave some interesting statistics illustrating Britain's supremacy at aCa. Lord . Morley said that the tonnage of all the steamships ill the world in June last was 35} millions gross. Of that, 17} millions, nearly a half, belonged to and Was owned by the Britisn Empire, and 16J millions, or 46 per ccnt., was owned in the United Kingdom. Many of the Bhips under foreign flags were discarded British vessels. In 1907 thoro wet' 0.282,000 tons of steamships transferred to foreign flags; of which 73 per cent, wero built before 1900.' Of the million and a quarter tons added to the British Mercantile Marine 95 per cent, were steamers of the latest design. ■ Of the 20 million tons of shipping wliieb passed though the Suez Canal last year 14 millions were under the British flag.
