"THE DOMINION."
To-day is the first anniversary of the birth of Dominion. Twelve months I ago the . paper was' launched to. fight its way into popular favour or' to fall by the wayside, and looking back Wr the days that liavc passed, the 1 retrospect is a pleasant one. The Dominion came into existence with ideals and with ambitions. It aspired to bo a truly national newspaper; a journal which, while holding strong convictions on various matters of public concern, w.ould be actuated only by the highest motives, and-guided by the one xlcsjro tp advance!, the best interests of the whoje community. In our r first issue we wvo.te: —" Wo shall strivo to make our paper a tru)y representative one, giving 'full and free representation to the views of every class and interest in the community—pandering to none—reserving to ourselves the right to comment in our editorials as we shall think fit—and desiring only from .every class the ; tribute that", whatever the editorial opinions may be, the reports of news are full and absolutely without bias or feeling." It was promised that The Dominion would be kept in the forefront of modern journalism in the matter of news services, and features new to daily newspaper life in New Zealand were'announced. It is not f.or us, to dwell on our efforts to fulfil the promises madp. No endeavour has been spared to produce a newspaper fully equal tp the requirements of this rapidly-growing cpmpunity-r-a paper in which the public could feel, confidence and perhaps a littfc pride. We have striven to place the paper in the front rank of New Zealand journalism; and it is gratifying to realise today that, in the brief period whiph hag elapsed since the first issue of the paper. The Dominion has acliievcd this purr ppse. The support extended to ft from the outset 'exceeded the most sangiiine .expectations, and the, steady and rapid increase of circulation njonth by month has afforded convincing tesfjinjpijy of public approval, and has given added stimulus to the epdeavours piacje to realise the highest expectations of tjie •journal's numerous wellrwipherp. The; Dominion enters on the second year pf its existence stropg in its determination tp pursue unswervingly the course it has entered upon, and inspired to greater efforts for the advancement and protection of the public' interest by the very generous support extended to it by .the publiq, whose causa it endeavours faithfully. to serve.
