The new Mclling Bridge is now Hearing completion, the decking on the vehicular portion being about finished. Tho passenger ways, situate on either side'of the main structure, will be finished in a few days, and given fine weather it is expected that the wliolo work will be c(jmpleted within a, fortnight or three weeks. . An accident, serious" enough as it was, and • which might easily have resulted in a fatality, occurred in the m,iin street, Hutt, at 12.30 p.m. yesterday. '.Mr. J. Wooldridga was driving his express " van. past Young's Hotel, when his horse suddenly'swerved towards tho drinking trough, oil the roadside. ■ The sudden movement caused the driver to slip from his seat, and fall under the wheels, which passed over his, head,'inflicting severe scalp wounds. Drs. Minims and Hector were quickly on the spotj 'and after their attention the injured- man• was removed to his home, where at latest, information he waa progressing favourably. '..j ... The Hutt Valley Horticultural Show was continued .during yesterday afternoon and ' evening, when there was again'a very good attendance. Mr. Wood's orchestra was. again present, and; added- to the enjoyment of the numerous visitors. An elocutionary recital by r'torßev.-R. 3, Groy, of Oxford Terrace Church. Christcliiirch, was, given in the Petone Baptist Church last evening. Selections from Shakespeare, Tennyson, MacKenzie, Dickens, and lan Maclaren were given. Mr. Do R-iddcr gave several selections on the ortjan, and tho choir rendered an anthem. Mr. Harrowby sang two solos, and Mr.. Feish gave two fluto solos, Mr. Do Ridder playing the. accompnniments. At the conclusion tb<> R'-v Mr. Williams asked for a-vote of thanks,-wliieh was given most heartily.
