WADESTOWN TRAMS.
DEPUTATION: TO CITY COUNCIL;
■ A deputation from the, Wadestown Municipal Association waited on the City Council last night in connection with the proposed tramway extension-to that suburb. Mr. A- R- Atkinson was the spokesman, and ho said that when the suburb was addea to tho city, there was an arrangement that tho inattor, . with road widening, would 'roceivo attention. He-hoped that'the question of road widening would be dealt with at'onee. Ho reminded the that .in October, 1906, a poll was taken on a proposal to raise £28,000 for tramways, and in May last a poll was takeiv regarding the route, and the figures were 5 to 1 in favour of the Main Road. They understood that tKo engineer was at work on a fresh roufe?, and they would like to know what was going ]to be done. Tney had been'patient—too inucli so, some, said—but they suffered by tho attitude of the Rhodes Estate- trustees,-"and"'the)' objected to the wishes of tho people boing subordinated to the wishes of the trustees. The speaker was prepared for any compromise, but there was no real compensation'in taking tho Kaiwarra route. It was a matter for the-experts, and he asked that their report be published. A valuer's report also was necessary." .... "
11l reply, the Mayor said that the Tramway Committee had the matter under consideration, and a deviation was proposed. They would understand the reasons why it was not proposed to divulge the exact locality at prosent. He hoped that a further Report on the subject would bo ready for next meeting of the council, and he trusted .that tho delay would be justified. Tho deputation then withdrew. ,
