LETTERS TO THE EDITOR.
DOMINION DAY CELEBRATIONS. , Sir, —As an interested spectator of tlio procoolings in Newtown Parle on Dominion Day lost year, one mntter struck me as being capable of considerable improvement). Tlio various manoeuvres were carricd out in at very creditable m&nnor, but the music left very much to be desired. It iras not the quality of the linlsie, but the unvaried monotony of it, which caused morethaii one to ask if the military bands of this Dominion knew how to play moro than two tunes. Thoy rung the changes oil these two airs to such a degree that an audible sigh of relief went up when, as eventually occurred, they broke out in a fresh place, and played—the National Anthem. Hoping that some of tho hands may havo learned to play a now tuno during tlio past twelve months, and that they will give us the benefit of it on Saturday.—l am, etc,, OLD SOLDIER. September 24. , THE ROLLS: A CHALLENGE. Sir,—l havo neither time nor inclination to waste words or play at cross purposes in this matter. Al! men should bo given a fair chance to clear their names from such charges as are indirectly niado by tho "trauo" representatives. L therefore, challenge Mr. Fitzgerald or any other person or member of the Ilutt Licensed Victuallers Associatibn to malco a definite statement oither that I enrolled Miss Carter or that I knew she was being enrolled by Mr. Sussex or any other person, or that I had intimated to Mr. Sussex directly or indirectly anything concerning Miss Carter till after I knew she had been enrolled. I certainly knew that Miss Carter was not twenty-oue till October, and told her in' April that she would bo able to vote. I know of dozens who will qualify for enrolment during the next few weeks, and if the "trade" are as anxious as I am to prove to tho country that such a ciroumstano.e does not warrant the "trade" to play ducks and drakes with tlio honour of myself or Miss Carter or Mr. Sussex, let them stop thoir "ho says," or "sho says," and respond to this challenge in a direct way. —1 am, etc., THOS. TOWNSEND, Secretary Hutt No-License League. September 24.
