All Red-..and Mon Ami were withdrawn from thc^Fljing-Handicap, for which the New Zealand- Gup candidate -Tip Too was made a good favourite, while Martyrium and Irish Riflo were next/in demand. Tiptoo did not get away- any too well, but ho made up his ground steadily, and was nicely placed when the straight was reached. Then, with his long strides, he settled: Irish Riilo without any particular effort. He had been doing good wofk since his arrival in Wanganui, but ho does;not appear to be thoroughly wound up yet. '. He is ;one: of t the light-weight division in jtho.-'New-Zealand Cup. Irish Rifle., ran ! meritoriously, but was no match, for the winner at the weights. Martyrium did not begin in his usual good style, and never looked a;, likely winner.
There , were fifteen starters in the Maiden Hack Race, Cork'bcipg selected favourite, tho other w.ell-backed candidates being Bollin, Conquestina (late Subdue), and Castiglione. Mania was fractious ~at ,tbe barrier,, and unseated hpr jockey before the start. The Raft -was turned round when the barrier wao releaked, and was, nover. able to got within strike of the leaders'. The rest or the field were ini;a fair lino when the dispatch was' effected,' but they immediately strung out into a long-ling?" Bolliii' got a bad position in tho first Furlong, and racing second to last his chances of success looked almost hopelosa. WhenV'tbilclied'with'..whip, he fiirly Sew ovor the last 'furlong, and won a great race by a neck. It was a groat performaneo especially when it is taken into nccount that the Karnmu horse is a New Zealand Cup candidate, and is being given * preparation for the two-mile, event Clanchattan's three-year-old sister showed a good turn of pace in this eVcnt.
