TAURANGA'S GAS WORKS.

(81-TELEGEAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Tauranga, September 23. The tender of Messrs.- Gibbons Bros./ of Dudley, England, has been accepted for.tho supply of gasworks and maiiis complete for Tauranga. [A gas'concession .was obtained for Tauranga by Messrs. It. Keene and Reid, of •Wellington, about six or eight months ago. Both these g'cntleni'en are at present in England in conncction with the purchase by tender of! a gas-making : plant j, and a steamer which is .to run between Tauranga and Wellington with produce and back from a West Coast port with coal.] '

A deputation asked the Minister for Railways on Tuesday' night', whether the' railway rates for imported fruit-could. hot be' made tho same as on locally grown fruit. Mr.' HallJones, 'in.reply, said this could not be done without raising the rates on the locally grown fruit. Tho timber to make tho'cases was also conveyed free. Theso should enable tho cities to get cheap fruit. Tho deputation then asked if tho rates on' fniit that could ■not be grown in tho'Dominion'could bo_ reduced.
