EFFECT ON SHIPPING. "No movements cxpcctod to-day," was the report received from Ureymouth by the Union Company yesterday. The southerly which visited Wellington yesterday afternoon was at Greymouth earlier in the day, and the bar was unworkable. The Kaitangata is loaded, and waiting a favourable opportunity to leave for Wellington. On the West Coast of this island tho bar harbours are also-bad, Foxton, Wanganui, and Patea being unworkable. Our Wairarapa correspondent states that tho Ruamahanga River was running bank and bank on Tuesday night and yesterday morning j which is an indication that tho rain has melted some of tho snow on the ranges. Last night heavy rain fell, and a wind squall of great violence prevailed for some time. (BY TELEGKAM—I'KESS ASSOCIATION.) Christchurch*, September 23. The barometer reading at Lyttelton yes. terday evening was exceptionally' low, the inorcury standing at 29.26 at 9 o'clock. This porning the reading was 29.34. There was ji warm nor'-wester blowing,' but a changc came about 11.30 a.m., when a violent southwest' squall, accompanied by heavy rain, brdke over the port. A heavy galo was experienced in tho_ district to-day, but has subsided, and rain is falling.
