Tho Fire Brigade received two calls last evening, the first at 6.16 p.m. to a chimney firo at a house in Hobson Crescent, occupied by Mr. M. Denniston. The second call was at 6.45 p.m. to a dwelling, 178?Taranaki Street, occupied by Mr; Ludovic Norris. A window curtain in an upstairs bedroom' was destroyed beforo the inmates got the firo under.
By a prin tor's error the Rev. R. J. Porter was represented yesterday as saying that an Oamaru employer had been saved by NoLicense £30 a week, which previously he had to spend in "shouting" in connection with his business. The amount should have read 30s. It should also bo stated that the man referred to by Mr. Porter ts having been once greatly addicted to drink, though now quite steady, is now attending not Mr.. Portor's but another church*.
Ono of the now postal railway cars, which are to be used on the Main Trunk line, was given a run on tho Wellington-Napier express train yesterday. Tho hew car is one of eight, _ 50ft. iu length Tho compartment is very spacious, well fitted for the quick sorting and _ stamping of postal matter, . and with good pigeonhole accommodation. Mail bags are received and delivered from aperture's in the centre of the sides of tho van, and not at tho ends as in cars of previous make.
Mr. T. Adair, a well-known Gisborno business man, returnod by the Warrimoo yesterday from an extended tour of America and the Old Country. He will probably leave for Gisborno to-morrow. Speaking, to a Dominion representative, Mr. Adair said that he spent a "most interesting and enjoyable holiday, and while in England lie 1 met a fellow-townsman, Mr. W.. Miller, ■ who ,is touring the world. Mr. Adair visited the Franco-British Exhibition frequently; and he was greatly surprised at the failure: of New Zealand to seizo such a favourable opportunity of advertising her products. Not, only was the Dominion poorly represented, but the exhibits were badly displayed, and some wore plaocd in a position out of sight of the ordinary observer.
A meeting of the Presbyterian 'Sabbath School Association was held in St: John's Classroom oil Tuesday overling. Thoro was a good attendance, and tho Rov. W. Shirer presided. Statistics had been collected showing that there aro 17 schools ill the city and suburbs with 1386 scholars. It was reported that tho organisation of the Home Department was receiving attention, and also tho teachers' training classes. The Rev. It.: J. Porter gave an address on the duties of parents, the State, and the Church tc( the children. He stated that 110 classes' had been formed in the Dominion to givo special religious instruction insido ordinary school hours. Mr. Porter, was given a vote of thanks for his address.
The final round of the fourth annual dei.'.iting tournament, held under the auspices of the ■Wellington Literary and Dobating Softies' Union, will tak'o place in tho Town Hall Concert Chamber to-night between tho Kent Terraco Literary and Debating Society and tho Victoria College Literary and Debating Society. The former society will bo represented by Messrs.'E. C. Jack, C. : S. Falconer, and M. Frasor, and tho latter by Messrs. AI. H. Oram, G. H. Gibb, and J. hi. Hogben. Mr. Granville Hunt, who is wellr known in eonnectioii with those tournaments, will act as judge.
