' NOTES AND COMMENTS. IBy Glencoe.l The AVanganui Jockey Club's meeting commences to-day, and will be concluded on Saturday. Tho Geraldino Cup' is run to-day. Reservoir, who won tho second hurdle race at Avondale yesterday; won four events last season out of twenty-two starts. When Achilles won tho Wanganui Guineas in 1802 lie covered the mile in lmin. 42 2-5 sec. This still stands as a record for tho raco.
Four of the five owners who have representatives in the Wanganui Guineas to-day have:won the event in previous years. Mr. G. P. Donnelly, who has not yet won the event, has an excellent representative in today!s race in the shape of Formative. Pronun, who won a hack race at Trentham in July, is engaged in the Squatters' Hack Handicap at Geraldino to-day. Truthful, who used to dg in Frank Higgott's stable, is also engaged in the same race. Mr. A. Barclay, owner of Penates, intends remaining in Sydney until after the Australian Jockey Club's spring meeting. Count Ivan Szapary, the great Hungarian authority on. horse-breeding, made a special trip to England in July-for the . purpose of securing -brood .mares. He found that the best of the marcs wore not for sale, ; and that any good ones sold at auction wero put up with a large reserve on them. The English breeders recognise the value of good mares, and are not disposed to lot many of them go to Continental buyers. . . Weights for the spring meeting of the Hawke's Bay Jockey* Club are due on Moudiy neit. The New Zealand . Cup candidates, Probable, Armamento, and ' Field Gun figure among the acceptors for the principal r*c« at Geraldino to-day. .■ Mr. Harry Payne Whitney,, an American breeder, who is in .Europe, has announced thit the serrices of all his stallions at his Brookdale Stud .Farm, New Jersey, with the exception of the. famous Hamburg and the young horse,. Burgomaster, are free to farmers and breeders. Mr..A. J. Joyner, Mr. Whitney's trainer, said the offer was made by Mr. Whitney to givo the New Jersey farmers the chance to continue breeding, a% under the recent changes in racing conditions few stallions now arc available to tho farmers (racing is prohibited in Now Jersey). , Thq horses so., generously placed at the disposal of ■ breeders include ky.ndringham, bred by His Majesty King Edward; Ballyhoo Bey, a Futurity winner; Prince Hamburg, and Fairy Prince. Imprimis,ifiwhojwafe- amoug:tho:.wiiiners at Avondale yesterday, is a half-sister to King's Lynri. .Last "season she was racing among tho ponies. . Mr W. Scott was among the passengers who .arrived from • Sydney • by. the AVarrimoo yesterday. In a brief conversation I had with Mr. Scott ho informed me that he had had an excellent trip, and had enjoyed tho. holiday very much. Mr.. Scott saw several race meetings on-the other 1 side, and was present at the Tattcrsalls meeting when Artillerie .and- Waipuns competed; Artillerie, he says, must have broken lmin. 40sec. for tho first mile in tho Rawson Stakes, as she was fight out by_ herself up till that stage, and tho full distanco was covered in record time. Perkeo, who won tho event,' is/a promising sort,- but was lucky to beat Mooltan. Tho New Zealanders speak highly of the latter horso, and predict a great season for him. Artillerie and Sea King have' both numerous admirers for the Epsom Handicap, and Golden Slipper is in great favouritism for tho- Caullield Cupl She has made a great impression over there. Sir. Scott was',not surprised to hear of her defeat last Sat.ur.day, as she did not- appear to bo quito ready for racing yet. The.lightweight jockey, J. Pike, recently returned, from England, is riding in splendid form in Sydney, and his services are in great demand with owners. Ho had tho mount on Perkeo in the Rawson Stakes.
Tho crack Queensland jockey, J. Hayes, has beeii engaged to ride Sea King and Gross Battery in their principal Australian engagements. James Barden will pilot Golden Slipper in the Derby, but it has not been settled who will ride her at Melbourne in tho Cups. ' No jockey lias so far been engaged to rido Artillerie in the Epsom. The owner of tjie filly offered £500 for a win in that event to L. Wilson, R. Hatch, or A. Oliver, but these jockeys all liavo engagements iii tho 'Dominion in November, which they would not forego.
