HOKITIICA PERJURY. CASE. . , (BY TELEOKAriI—IMIF.S3 ASSOCIATION.) 1 Hokitika,'September 22 , The Connolly perjury case was continued to-day. Formal evidence was given as to distances of various places and points. The cvidenco of Mrs. Pearce, of Westport, who said she was an eye-witness of the murder by Connolly, took a' considerable time. Witness denied some of the passages in her original depositions, and was cautioned later on. She was closely examined by his Honour as to why she had not informed, tlie' police at the outset of what she had Veen, especially as Inspector Bjack made a personal inquiry. She replied that she was afraid, not having any protection. Ten witnesses were disposed of. Sonic of them gave a different version of certain circumstances, necessitating the reading; of depositions at previous trials at Westport and Nelson, and thereby greatly protracting the proceedings. v . Glstiorno, September 22. Martin Malcolm o'llalloran, who pleaded' guilty to forgery and uttering, was brought before the Supreme Court .for sentence this morning, and was admitted to probation for eighteen months. Napier, September 22. At the Supreme Court, .Charles Tipping was found guilty of assault on' Johanna Smith, causing actual bodily harm, and was remanded for sentence. 1 William James Fargher, charged with assaulting another man with, a stirrup-iron, was acquitted.
