CHAMBER. OF COMMERCE. The eighth annual report of the Masterton Chamber of 'Commerce, to be presented at tho annual meeting, states that various matters,have had tho.attention.of the cham-. bar during tho:past year. Among the most important is ; tho ■ continuous telephone ser : vice, which .may at "any time'provo of incalculable benofit, not' only to individual subscribers, but to'tho district generally. In this connection thanks are due to Mr. J. D. Cruickshank, ex-president, through whose energy tho' necessary signatures to. tho undertaking' were obtained. After years of agitation,;initiated and continued by . tho chamber, thbro is at last a probability , of tho northern approach receiving tho required attention from the local bodies responsible. The proposed Masterton-Waipuktirau railway via l'ongaroa is still engaging tile attention of tho chamber, which was represented the deputation, that recently waited on tho' Minister for Public Works, who promised to place tho , matter before Cabinet. Tho Wliareama River Reserve, as a seaside summdr rosort/is, at tho .instigation of tho cliambor, receiving, the, attention "of tho Government,. being strongly supported by tho members of Parliament for Masterton and Wairarapa. The inconvenience of tho various Government» Departments being scattered about the town was brought under the notice of the Minister for Public "Works in January.last,. with a request that the question of bringing thert under one roof should be considered; to .which a reply was received in March vthat' the ■ matter' would receive earnest' consideration." " A further reply is now awaited. It is-to'bo regrottcd that although sum has ; ;been placed on tho Estimates'for building' a : now courthouse, which is ; recognised as being urgently 1 required, nothing further is at present in sight, Tho' thanks of .tho chamber as heretofore are diie to Mr; A.' W. Hogg, M.P., and also to Messrs. Abraham 'and. Williams, Ltd.
The""balance-shcet" (writes our' Wairarapa correspondent) shows a credit of £61- 15s. 9d. ' ./•
There, are 269 pupils on. the roll of. the Masterton Technical' School, the fees received totalling £45 2s. 6d.,for the term just concluded. , ■ Salaries,amounted to £165 Bs., and capitation. £78.175;-9d. ■ : Mr. R; G. Coates, lecturer for. the Melanesian Mission, Society,, has • addressed 'some interesting meetings here on missionary work in the. Islands. -~ A'telegraphic chess match between. St. Matthew's and the, Martinborough Clubs was played .here- on Saturday evening,' and »■: suited in the defeat of Martinborough'- by three games to two. It. is intended .to fit the new Masterton Technical School (jvith forty-four-"combined . , seats and deskß, which, with the exception of the ironwork, are to be manufactured locally. ' , The Mauricevillo School Committee has objected to'a iwoman teacher, in'place of Mr. Turner;' who recently resigned, and a • male' relieving' teacher .is; now in charge ' of tho Bchobl until tlie next board meeting, wheri another-appointment.'will bo raado.
