Forty-sis amateurs _ and six professionals led off this morning in the open championship of Now Zealand ill light rain, which ceased before 110011. The North Island amateurs were, however, represented by oiic' player only, namely, H. Saunders, champion of tho Wanganui Golf Club this year. Tho absenco of A. Duncan, of Wellington, was much regretted, but owing to his recent trip to tho Australian golf tournament in Sydney he could not come down to Dunedin. W. ,B. Colbeek, H. Gillies, and J. Burns, of Auckland, are' also unfortunately ■absent, and it is practically a certainty that a South Islander will be the 1908 champion of New Zealand unless Saunders improves grcntly npou his present game. Fred Hood, the .Auckland professional, is also a nonstarter. Clements, the young Auckland professional, was on his game to-day, except occasionally on the greens. However, his chances are good, and should he win 110 will bo tho first native-born New Zealandcr to win tho open championship competing with .tho professionals from Home. His aggregate for tho first two rounds is IG4. Other leading scores arc:—D. Hood (Oamaru) 162, Herd (Christchurch) 168, It. Smith (amateur) 168, Wntt (Melbourne) 174, Johnstono (Wellington) 178, Milliner (St.Clair) 179. To-morrow tho two remaining rounds of the open championship will bo played, and concurrently tho two qualifying'rounds for tho amateur -
