WIRELESS PLANT.

COMMONWEALTH PLAiNS DELAYED. (DY TELEQEArH—PItESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT.) Melbourne, September 21. Five firms tendered for the supply of material for the wireless plant the Commonwealth Government proposes Greeting 'in various parts of Australia, but the tenders did not lincludo the cost of erection. This will necessitate fresh tenders, and will cause a long delay. , , THE AUSTRALIAN SCHEME. It was announced last December that 'tenders were to be oalled for the first section of the wireless installations recommended by the Wireless Telegraphy Conference, consisting of representatives of the Australian Postal and Defence Departments and the Admiralty. This section was Sydney, Cape Yorke, anil Port Moresby (New Guinea), with perhaps one subsidiary station in Torres Strait. To link up these stations, a range of at least 850 miles is required. The following table shows the whole of the stations recommended by the conference, arranged in order of importance, with the minimum l range of miles required in each case, are as follow:— .. I.—Sydney, 300 miles. 4.—Fremantle, 300. 2.—(a) Cape Yorke, 350; s.—Cape Borda,. 300. (b) Port Moresby, 850 f'GJ—Moretoii' Bay, 300. (c) subsidiary stations 7.—Capo Leeuwin, 300, on adjacent islands, 50. B.—Tasmania (North 3—Wilson's Promontory Coast), 300. 300.- 9.—GeraJdton,W.A.,3oo The report of the conference points out that the purpose is improved efficiency of defence, and greater security of life and property afloat, rather than immediate financial results. The report suggests that Sydney, Cape Yorke, and Port Moresby should be proceeded with first, and the others at intervals of two years, as funds are made available. With the adoption of the whole scheme, from 300 miles north of Moreton Bay to 300 miles west of Cape Borda .(Kangaroo Island, South 'Australia), any ships with wireless apparatus would be continuously within range of a. station. The conference saw no immediate necessity for establishing communication with .New Zealand, since it would be' of use only in the remote contingency of thp three existing cables being cut.
