(BY TELEGEAPH—PBESS ASSOCIATION.) 1 4 . SUDDEN DEATH. .... Woodville, September 19. An old man named William Isles died rather suddenly yesterday afternoon. He had been ill only a few hours. He was about 80 years of age, and had been twenty-five years in this district, but in tho sixties he used to drive a wagon from Dunedin to' the goldfields. AN OLD MAN'S DEATH. Dunedin, September' 20. A man named David Reid, aged 70 yearß, a superannuated railway crossing-keeper, was found dead on Ocean Beach this morning. It is supposed that deceased committed suicide by jumping eft' the cliff at. Lawyer's Head. Deceased's wife died a few months ago, and he had been very despondent ever since. FOUND DROWNED. , Christcliurch, September 20. A woman named Mary Kennedy.was found drowned in the Avon this morning. Sh« is supposed to have been sleeping-on the bank and rolled in. At tho inquest a ver diet of found drowned was returned. ckILD FATALLY BURNED. Christcliurch, September 20. Charles Arthur Burrows, ten months old, died in the hospital this morning as the resull of burns received through his clothes catch* ing fire. At the inquest a verdict of accidental death was returned. WOMEN'S FRANCHISE. FcildiilGi September 19; A meeting in commemoration of the extension of the franchise to women was held >last night. It was addressed by. Mrs. Low, 111 A. Wellington, tho point of whose address was summed up in the concluding sentence, in which the speaker said"Women did not object to men being lords of creation, but wanted to bo their equals, without limitations, as ladies of creation." SUPREME COURT. Cisborne, September 18. Joseph Johnston and James Keegan, prisoners from Christcliurch, pleaded guilty to burglary of a store at Waerengaaluka, and wero remanded for sentence. Joseph Dante, found guilty of theft of luggage, was sentenced to ono year's imprisonment, and on a charge of burglary was sentenced to eighteen .nonths,' tho sentences lo.be concurrent. Tlio jury, after four ar.d a half hours, failed to agree in-the case of James Garretty, charged with attempted theft from the person on tlio steamer Manuka. A new trial was ordered. I-lALF-HOLIDAY PROSECUTIONS. Dunedin, September IS. In the Police Court this morning, three coal'merchants were lined 605., 00s., and 40s. respectively, for breaches of the Shops and Oilieos Act, ; in regard .to the weekly halfholiday..
