Tho New Zealand riders did not show up prominently. Last year G. Ilorder, of New South AYalcs ,(wlio this year was on scratch along with Larcombe), did the Goulburn-Sydney race in C hours .37 minutes 30 seconds, or 'Ji seconds longer than Larcombe's new record. To give a start .of SO miuutes is conceded to be a big task over such a mountainous course. Larcombe is tlie Australian load champion. • Among the' New Zealand riders were AV. Virgin' (10 minutes), H. .Anderson (25 minutes), and J. T. Summers (30 minutes). The event, which is rim under tho auspiccs of the League of AVheelmen. attracted riders from almost every State in tho Commonwealth. The Dunlop Rubber Company, the promoters, give the pricipal prize money, tho trade supplying the balance. ■ . ' r RUNNING. TEN MILES CROSS-COUNTRY. (Roc. ' Tho Marathon raco from AVindsor Castle to the Stadium at Shepherd's Bush,, a distance of 26 miles 355 yards,'will, perhaps be the most memorable of all the contests at the recent Olympic games. The Italian Dorando, who came in first, was disqualified because in tho last few yards he was assisted. Dorando's time was 2hr. 54mi11. 46 2-ssec. for the 26 miles 385 yards—nino miles an hour, or 6 2-3min. per mile. ' The time put up by the American Hayes, who was placed f first, was 2hr. 55min. 18sec., 31 3-ssec. more. Neither is a record for the distance. SCULLING. TOWNS RESUMES HARD TRAINING. (Roc. ' LAWN TENNIS. . DAVIS CUP PRELIMINARY TIE. New York, September 18. At lawn tennis, in tho Davis Cup prelimtnaiy tie, Larned (America) beat Parke (Britain), 6 —3, 6 —3, 7 —5. Ritchie (Britain) beat Beals-Wright (America), 6—l, 6—3, 6-2. AMERICANS WIN THE DOUBLES. (Rec. September 20, 4.20 p.m.) Naw York, September 19. In the doubles (Davis Cup preliminary tie), tho American doubles champions, Hackett and Alexander, beat the British pair. Ritchie and Parke, 6—3, 2—6, 7—5 6—2. <

W. A. Lamed, tho United States outdoor champion m # 1907, is generally considered to bo a superior player to the young Irish aspirant, J. C. Parke; and as F. B. Alexander and H. H; Hackett were the doubles chamof United States last year, it is probably to be expected that they v»ould prove a better combination.on their'own soil than the two men sent over as the English team. With two events lost to one gained, the tide seems to be sotting against Britain, and increasing the chances of tho Americans coming to Melbourne. Mr. M. J. G. Eitchie, who has been doscribed as "steadiness personified," did very well in beating Beals C. Wright, who, with Karl Bohr, did battle for tho Davis Cup at .Wimbledon last year. _ The class; of player Mr. Ritchie can be was instanced in the recent Olympic contests, when he beat the German crack Froitzhoim, who had previously beaten Mr. Parke. One account states: "Mr. Ritchie's determination to win was well known, and in that mood Mr. Eitchie is bad to beat. It was an error of judgment on Mr. Froitzheim's part to reply with the same policy of steadiness. Had he played the enterprising gamo ho opposed to Mr. I'arke, Germany might now be looking down upon the British Isles instead of up at them. His Roland was not the equal of Mr. Ritchie's Oliver. Tho latter has not tho German player's variety of strokes, but he has unlimited-British tonacity, and is a master of steadiness, and 011 these he won." LATE SPORTING. (ftec. September 21, 1 a.m.) Sydney, September 20. Soultline won the Camellia Stakes at '{■ojchill, defeating Xantippus by two •(Ml^tllS. Golden Slipper and Cross Battery ran iriplaccd in other events.
