WELLINGTON HOSPITAL.

DR. EWART INTENDS RESICNINC. AN IDEAL SUPERINTENDENT. Dr. En-art, medical superintendent of the Wellington Hospital, has intimated that he intends resigning that position shortly, on account of private reasons. It is understood that Dr. Ewart will take'up private practice when lie leaves tho hospital. The chairman of tho Hospital Trustees (the Hon. C. 11. Luke) informed a Dominion representative last evening that Dr. Ewart will have been superintendent of tho hospital for twenty years next February. His relations with the Trustees and staff havo always been, most harmonious and agreeable, and there havo been no " scandals " of any kind during his long period of office. "I regard his resignation as a calamity, not only to the hospital, but to tho citizens of Wellington," said Air. Luke. Tho chairman of Trustees further stated that he regarded Dr. Ewart as tho most ideal man for the position he has filled in tho whole of Australasia.

About threo years ago Dr. Ewart went on a holiday trip to England. It-is understood thnt his intended resignation is not connected with any complaint or dissatisfaction. It is suggested that the care of a largo institution like tho hospital, to a man of Dr. Ewart's highly conscientious character, may bo a burden which he would not wish to bear indefinitely. Dr. Ewart was born in Dumfriesshire, Scotland, and educated at Annan, the school which Thomas Carlyle attended. He took his degrees of M.8., C.M., at Edinburgh in 1880, and his JI.D. degreo in 1885. Till 1889 ho practised in Abcrdare, South Wales, but owing to a breakdown in health came out to New Zealand in tho ship Waimatc: After a rest in the colony, during which his health was greatly improved, Dr. Ewart became surgeon of tho Timaru Hospital for a few months. Afterwards he was appointed to hij present position.
