,■ POLICE CASES. (Before Mr. AV. G. Riddell, S.M.) THEFTS FROM A. BUTCHER. ' A young mah named Frank Humphries pleaded guilty to four separate charges of theft of sums of money, totalling £3 ss. 5d., from Wm. Ernest Lutz, butcher. Chief-Detective M'Grath informed the Court that accused was employed collecting accounts and delivering meat for Mr. Lutz, in whose employ ho was engaged for two years,' during practically the whole ot which time ho had been stealing small sums of money, which totalled something like £40. Mr.- Kirkcaldie, who appeared for the defence, pleaded for leniency on behalf of his client, who, ho suggested, should bo convicted and ordered to come up for sentonco when called upon. His Worship remarked that the lapse was not; a. solitary one, but a series of thefts. On the first charge a conviction and fino of £5, in default one month's imprisonment, was imposed,- accused being ordered to refund the ss. sd. stolen. On the second and third charges a conviction and order for the refund of the £1 in each case was entered, in default ono month's imprisonment. On the fourth chargo accused was remanded until to-day to enable him to find tho money, bail being allowed in tho sum of £25. MISCELLANEOUS. John Butler was charged with having on September 17, at AYellington, assaulted ono Conton Larsen so as to cause him actual bodily harm. On the application of the police a. remand until September 23 was granted. Bail-was allowed in tho sum of £50 and two sureties of" £25 each. Mr. P. AV. Jackson appeared for accused. -■ Alexander Churchman and Jas. Wm. Hutchison were each convicted and fined 10s., in default 48 hours', imprisonment, on charges of insobriety. Ono first offender was fined 10s., and two others wore fined ss. each. A middle-aged woman named Stella Taylor was convicted and sentenced to ono month's imprisonment on a charge of importuning. On a .second chargo of using obscene Janguago a sentence of fourteen days' imprisonment, to rim concurrently with the first charge, was imposed. ' .
