' VISITS HIS NEW SPHERE OF WORK. ■' ' . ■ ~~~ -. * Mr. J. A*. Gilruth, chief Government veterinarian and pathologist of . New Zealand, became, for a few, brief Weeks just past, Professor Gilruth (of veterinary pathology) to'tho .Melbourne University College. •. He/returned temporarily from that ; transformation • on Thursday as' a passenger on the steamer Maitai. The object of his visit to Melbourne was to consult the Senate, which presides over the Victorian University, and general]}-—doubtless—to show himself and to see his-future companions. When 110 reached Melbourne he was met by representatives of the-university arid of-tho Victorian Government, ' was introduced to Sir John Madden (Chancellor of tho University), and was banqueted by tho university professors, with Cabinet Ministers among, the company.Mr. Gilruth states that the university has taken over an existing veterinary Echool, and ' will receive a Government subsidy. He'will have charge.' of the veterinary college and bo assisted by the professors of chemistry, botany, physiology, etc., and lecturers on special veterinary work. He will direct an institute of stock diseases research which tho Government will establish in connection with his,college. The whole expenses of the veterinary 'work would amount to about £4000' per . annum, and the college -and research institute would form,'one of the finest ; veterinary schools. in the- ■ Empire, and' be unique in Australasia. In, the Old Country he knew of only one veterinary school— at Edinburgh—that was connected with a university. Mr. Gilruth will leave New Zealand next January, and open his college in March.
