♦ — ; — 1 THE POPE AND BRITAIN. ENCLISH LIBERTY APPRECIATED. LESSON TO JACOBINS. (bx tblegeapii—r it ess association copyuioht.) (Rec. September 18, 1.10 a.m.) London, September 17. Hen tor's Rome correspondent states that the Vatican denies that any rosentmeht is felt against tho British Government owing to the prohibition of the carrying of the Host in the procession of the Blessed Sacrament in connection with-the Eucharistic Congress. His Holiness the Pope and tho other dignitarios of the' Vatican Quito understand tho causo of the prohibition, and express great satisfaction at the liberty granted to tho Congress. They consider that such liberty will be a lesson to the Jacobins of all countries. The Jacobins were the members of a club or society of French revolutionists organised in 1789 under the name of tho Society of Friends of the Constitution, and called Jacobins from the Jacobin convent in Paris in which they met. Tho club originally included many of the moderate leaders of the revolution, but the more violent members speedily gained the control. It had branches in all parts of France, and was all-powerful in determining the course of government, especially after Robespierre became its leader, supporting _ him in the measures which led to the Reign of u error. Many of its members were executed with Robespierre in July, 1794, and the club was suppressed in November.
