Bulls, September 16. Tho weather was miserably wet for the opening day of the ftangitikei Racing Club's spring meeting, and consequently tho attondanco was below the average. The courso was in a bad state, but tho racing was good, and somo exciting finishes resulted. Twelve bookmakers were present, at a foe of £15 10s. They all appeared to do plenty of business, and judging by the dividends returned that business mus't have been fairly profitable. Tho totalisator returns showed a substantial decrease. The sum put through was £3371, as against £6214 for tho corresponding day last year. The following aro the results :— FLYING HANDICAP. Six furlongs. Mr. O. Austin's eh. g. Toa Tuhi, by Conqueror—Chainstitch, Gyrs., 7st. 111b. (Lamboss) 1 Mr. H. Gaisford's Illustrious, 7st. 41b. ' (R. Hatch) 2 Mr. R. To Hianga's Tua Tahi, 7st. (F. Cross) 3 Also started: Splendid Idea, Sst. 111b. (C. Jenkins); Lamsdorlf, 7st. 81b. (M. Eraser); Millonial, 7st. (J. Lowe). Toa Tuhi, who was well supported, got away with Splendid Idea, while Millonial was hopelessly loft. Toa Tuhi and Splendid Idea kept together-to the entrance of tho straight, whore tho former drew away, and won comfortably by a length. Time, lmin, 18 4-ssec. WILLOW BANK HACK STEEPLES. Two miles and a half. Mr. H. E. Connop's blk. m. Clarabclle, by Papakura, aged, lOst. 21b. (C. Mitchell) 1 Mr. R. Cooper's Kuranui, lOst. 91b. (T. Pritchard) 2 Mr. H. Alexander's Whimper, 9st. 71b. (JHall): Good Night, 9st. 71b. (F. Whitehouse). Speciosa led tho field by several lengths to tho second fence, when she and Concussion fell, leaving Good Night in charge, with Mooshen, Ballance, Kuranui, and Whimper next in order, and tho rest closo up. Mooshen took charge to the polo paddock, but fell at the brush jump into the courso proper, and Clarabclle took up the running, and with Ballance alongside was first over the last jump. Ballance fell when landing, and Clarabollo ran homo an easy winner from Kuranui, with Whimper a good third and Waitoa fourth. Time, smin. 12 3-ssoc. • PUKEIIOU HACK HURDLES. One mile and a half. Mr. E. Jackman's blk. g. Pa.paraehi, by Papakura, syrs., 9st. 51b. (W. Young) ] Messrs. Bowcn and Corrigan's Lyrist, list. 31b .'. (C. Cochrano) 2 Mr. H. Connop's Papatawa, lOst. 61b. (C. MAIDEN HACK FLAT. Four furlongs. Mr. E.' W. Collins's b. m. Tlio Saint, by Sylvia Park —Undine, 4yrs., Bst. 91b. (S. Reid) 1 Mr. E. J. Watt's Wimmora, 7st. 111b. (H.Price) 2 Mr. A. Symon's Notorious, Bst. 111b. (F. Lambcss) 3 Also started: Maori Rifle, Bst. 131b. (H. Campbell); Pleiades, Bst. 131b. (R. Barlow); Flyaway, Bst. 111b. (J. Murphy); Mountain Melody, Bst .91b. (F. Ashton): Roosevelt, Bst. (R. Hatch); Charge, Tsfc.lllb. (A. Olliver); Marutoa, 7st. 111b. (J. Morris); Alma, 6st. (F. Cress). There was a false start, four of the contestants running a couple of furlongs. The field then got away on even terms. The Saint was quickest off "the mark, and at the distance Notorious was her nearest attendant, while the colours of Wimmora were prominont on the outside. The latter came with a great rattle, and was catching The Saint at every stride, but just failed to get up, The Saint winning by the shortest of hoads. Time, 51 3-ssec. There was an uncalled-for hostile demonstration as the numbers woro hoisted, a sec-tion-of the crowd being under the impression that Wimmera had won.' RANGITIKEI STEEPLECHASE, of 150 sovs. ■ Two miles and three-quarters Mr. E. J. Harris's ch. g. Bullworth, by Bulldog, aged, 9st. 131b. (Jno. O'Connell) 1 Messrs. W. and G. Stead's Starlight, lOst. (J. Stewart) 2 Mr. C. Bennett's Janella, lOst. (Jerry O'Connell) 3 Also started: Nadador, list. 91b. (J. Hall); Pilot, list. 71b. (T. Cahill); Tilson, lOst. 131b. (T. Pritchard); Aroha, lOst. 61b. (J. Allen); Mahoo, lOst. 61b. (C. Cochrane); Tekohau, 9st. 71b. ■(F. Grayland). Pilot and Starlight showed the way over tlio first jump, Tilson and Aroha being several lengths in the rear. Janella closed up coming into the straight the first time round, and showed the way over the hencoop with Starlight next, and Pilot third. Passing the stand Janella still led,, and going through the polo ground the order was the same, but Tilson, Mahoe, and Nadador had improved their positions. At the jump into the course proper, where Starlight was again in front of Janella, with Mahoe and Pilot close up, the latter made a faulty jump, and was pulled up shortly afterwards. Starlight and Janella drew out going round the back turn, and were several lengths in front of Mahoe and Bullworth, who had made up a lot of ground. Starlight, Janella, and Builwortht were together at tho last jump, and a slashing' go up tho straight resulted, in a half-length victory for Bullworth, who was ridden with groat judgment. Janella was two lengths away third. Mahoo'ran. off at tho last fcnce when close up fourth. Time, 6min. 10 4-ssee. The following table shows previous winners of tho race:— st. lb. m. see. 1899 Mr. T. Mahuta and Mussel made all tho runnings to,the entranco of the straight,. where the latter retired, and Glenullin moved. up. fast and quickly settled tho, fiold, winning comfortably by two lengths. Mahuta just lasted long enough to beat Golden. Gate by a short neck. Time, 2min. 4 3-osec! RANGITOTO HACK RAGE. Seven furlongs. Mr. C. Vincent's rn, m. Thaler led from Nicotino, to' tho turn, where Royal Makl shot to tho front. At the distance Thaler camo again, and, after a groat finish, Royal Maid just caught tho judge's eye by half a head. Buoyant was left at the post. Time, linin. 37 l-osec. NOTES ON THE RACING. It looked as if Toa Tuhi was merely cantering in a winner in the Flying Handicap, but it is well known that Mr. Austin's horse will not race under the whip, and his rider had instructions to sit still on him and not hustle him at all. He won by a clear length from Illustrious, who could not begin as fast as the winner. There wore several accidents in the Willowbank Steeplechase, and all the fancied candidates camo to grief. Concussion fell at the entrance to the straight, and Mooshen turned turtle at the back, while Ballance followed suit at the last fence, when holding a good position. .Clarabello, who won the Hack Steeplechase, has shown . fair form ' throughout tho season, and Coiraop was very sanguine of her ability to win. The Woodville trainer has been very successful in flag events on this courso, and last year won the big steeplechaso with Rangitoto, .and performed a similar feat somo nine years ago with St. Lemon, who was, however, disqualified for going the wrong . ourse, and the race was awarded to Whangaroa. Tho favourite, Gleam, cut up very badly in the Hack Hurdles, and finished second to last. Tho Wanganui-owned mare did not jump with any. confidence, and lost several lengths at c:.ch fence. Tho Dane, d'Nil, and Arahura wero withdrawn from the Pukohou Hack Hurdles yesterday. Tho latter horso has been returned to his owner, and will in future be used in a buggy. Tho Saint, who won the Maiden Race, is a fine, big four-year-old brown marc, by Sylvia Park from Undine, who was a ijood performer for Mr. W. Homes in the 'nineties. The Saint is owned by. the Ashhurst sportsman, Mr. E. W. Collins, and is trained by J. Sullivan. "Mr. Preston," owner of Frisco, was present at Bulls yesterday, aud was freely congratulated on tho success of his appeal. It is understood that the Wanganui Committee were practically unanimous iu upholding the appeal. ACCEPTANCES FOR SECOND DAY. (11l TELEGRAPH. —SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT ) Bulls, September 16. ' ' ' NOTES AND COMMENTS. ' 113 Y GLEKCOB.I The Rangitikei Racing Club's meeting will bo continued to-day. Outlander, who won the • Trial Plate ai Ashburton yesterday, is engaged in the New Zealand Cup with Gst. 71b; • . Noctuiform has been, entered for the. Caesarewitch, two miles and..a quarter, to bo run in England nest month. Weights for .the :hack events on the firs I day of the Wanganui Jockey Club's meeting will be declared to-morrow. Progeny of Finland aro doing well this season. Already Helianthes, Chief Lochiel, Vasa, and Outlander have credited tl\e Aus tralian-bred horse with wins!:.
Pleiades had numerous supporters for the Maiden Hack at Bulls yesterday. .Lady Lucy (Soaton Delaval—Hilda), ,whc won the Maiden Plate at the'Marton meeting a fortnight ' ago, Ms engaged in the Wanganui Guineas, to be run next week. Bullworth, 1 the Rangitikei Steeplechase winner, won two races.last season, the.Hunt Cup at Marton and the -Gisbo.rne Steeplechase. He also put up a good performance by running second to Sol' in ' the Takapuna Steeplechase. Somateria (Birkenhead —Merganser) is no - ,, trained by A. M'Kay at Forbury. • Among the mares booked to the Warrington sire Sarto are Fate (Stepniak—Enchantress) .and Dinna Forget, (Remembrance —En■chantress).>■ Paparaehi 'aindj Clarabelloi| winners of jumping events'at the Rangitikei-meeting yesterday, are both by the St. Leger horse Papakura (sire of Rangipapa). Several New Zealand Cup candidates came, into prominence yesterday. • . Probablo ana Outlander won, races at Ashburton, and Glenullin scored at the Rangitikei meeting, while Ringdove at Ashburton and Mahuta at Rangitikei each secured second places. Master Delaval, who has not won a race since he succeeded in the Metropolitan Handicap at Riccarton last November, is giving his trainer satisfaction in Auckland, and is expected to bo back in his. best, form by the time the New Zealand Cup fixture comes round. During tho four . Seasons .that . the bay gelding has been racing ; :he has won just short of £4000.in,!stakes.. As.he is still a young horse, and one of the best stayers in the Dominion, ho should' considerably add to his winnings before his racing career comes to r.n end. The principal.handicap at.-Ashburton yesterday was a good betting race, Prim, Ringdove, and Probable all being well supported. In his last four starts The Possible gelding Tuatahi. has been placed second once and third twice. i' The Dane was not started in tho Hurdles at Bulls yesterday, possibly' on account of the fact that the going was heavy, When raced at Levin last week tho St. Clements gelding failed to gain a place behind Hatley and Netherby, but ho looks the sort that will not take long to pay his way over tho jumps, and it will be a surprise to mo if he does not gain a place tho next time ho is started.
Just as Bill Squires was .short of about three, fights when he last met Tommy Burns, so Glonullin was short of a gallop or two when ho raced at Marton earlier in the month; The Lochiel horso had been doing excellent work on tho track prior to the Marton meeting, but he was not solid enough to see out a mile race. However tho couple of races-ho had at-Marton and tho gallops since evidently sharpened him up; added to this, the heavy going at Bulls yesterday would be, if anything, in. his favour. Among the field he defeated yesterday were five Now Zealand Cup candidates, but lie will moot all of them on worse terms in tho two mile raco in November. Still, if he stands up to his preparation all right (his trainer ridicules tho idea' of his going ahiiss), he mnst bo gjven a chance at lticcarton, and Trainer Eva is lucky to have in his' charge two such promising candidates as Glenullm and Uhlando. , , Tho removal of tho disqualification imposed on Frisco, his owner, and, his jockey, puts a different complexion on tho New Zealand Cup raco, as it means that both Frisco and Apa aro now almost certain starters in the event named, for both have been heavily backed to win. The action of tho Wanganui Metropolitan Committee, in not endorsing the disqualification, does not came as a. surprise, for tho general opinion held by sporting men was that as Frisco's running was not questioned on the first day of tho Marton meeting tho stewards had no right to find fault with it oil tho second day. Tho position, is a most unsatisfactory one for backers of Frisco, as it moans they havo backcd a winner and have received no dividend. It is generally - considered that it is high time the Rules of Racing, so far as tlioy refer to totalisator. investments, wore amended to-meet cases of this kind. It is tho public money that keeps racing going, and it is only right that tlio public should get a fair deal. In tho case under note tho totalisator investments should have been impounded until the owner's appeal had been finally dealt with. While on tho subject of tho totalisator there is a matter which' anncars to require the attention of the Racing Conference. Part XXX, llulo 8, of the Rules of Racing, says "Unless herein expressly provided to tho contrary all money paid for tickets shall go to tho dividend, and no claim for tho refund of any such money bo allowed," and Part XXX, Rule 14, says "No fractional part of sixpence shall bo paid unless the stowards or committee shall otherwise direct." From the above it is clear that any odd sixponces forming part of a dividend must bo paid out to tho public. Does tho Racing Conference take any steps to see that this rule is observed, and if so, can they assure tho public '.hat it has been observed at all meetings since the new season commenced?
