THE COMING ELECTIONS.
'MR. LUKE AT NORTHLANDS. Mr. j.- P. Luke, a candidate for the Wellington Suburbs soat, addressed. a well-at-tended meeting, .in the Trinity Methodist Churchroom,, Northlands, last evening. Tho chair was occupied by Mr. Richardson. The ■candidate's address was, on much the same lines as those delivered at previous meetings. He emphasised tho wisdom of tho policy of the present Government in securing closer settlement 'by immigration, but it was desirable that the right class of immigrant should be secured. If tho backblocks wore connected with tho, railways by means of roads and bridges it would increaso the productiveness of both town, and country. Mr. ,Luke also , favoured the extension'to worlcers of .tho benefits afforded by loans to settlers. At the close of the address a vote of thanks, proposed by Mr. L. Waddell, and seconded by Mr. L. O'Connor, was accorded the speaker.
LABOUR CANDIDATES. ' A largely-attended meeting of tho Labour ■Representation Committee was held in the Trades Hall last evening. ■ It was definitely decided to contest the Wellington East, Wellington South; and the Suburbs seats at tho forthcoming elections. Tho candidates to represent Labour 'will'be:—Wellington'■ East, Mr.'D. M'Laren; Wellington South, Mr. 0. H. Chapman; Suburbs, Mr. W. T. Young. A 'sum s ,of £80 is injhand at present as an election fund. Tho campaign will bo opened next Week. THE OROUA SEAT. ■ (BY TEtEGBAPn.—SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.) i Feilding, September 16. Mr.; Gutjirie, Opposition candidate for tho Oroua seat; had'a good attendance_ at,his meeting at''Apiti last night, despite- the roughness of. the weather, and tho electors gave him' a\ splendid reception. Ho spoke for about' two hours on the leading questions ,of the day. A. vote of thanks and confidence was carried at tho close of tho meetingA strong committee was formed, with Messrs. ■ Field and Purnell as chairman and secretary respectively. . ■■ i
MANTJKAU SEAT. (Bl' TELEGRAI'tt —rRESS ASSOCIATION.) . Auckland, Soptember 16. Mr. A. A. Creamer,- a member of the Grey Lynn Borough Council, and an advocate of No-License, will be a candidate for the Manukau. seat in opposition to Mr. F. W. Lang, the sitting member. AVON, ' Christchurch, September 16. Mr. W. R. Smith, a candidato for the Avon seat, addressed a. meeting at the Marshland Public Hall last evening. Tho speaker dealt with various questions, and announced his support of tho present Administration. He ' answered a number of questions, and stated that ho was not in favour of religious instruction in Stato schools, except by each denomination supplying its own teachers; that ho was a supporter of the leasehold; that ho was in favour of the bare majority as a ruling principle; that ho favoured preference to unionists; that he would vote in favour of tho present Administration on a no-confidence motion, oxcept in the case of an extremely drastic measure. WESTLAND. • Hokitika, Soptember 16. Mr. H. L. Michel, candidato for Westland against tho sitting member, addressed a very large audience this evening. He declared himself a supporter of the present Government, considering the present Prime Minister the only possible leader; but ho seriously criticised some measures, and especially tho administrotiop of tUo Mine? Department.
