VICTORIA COLLEGE COUNCIL.
A meeting of tho. Victoria Collego Council was held last evening. Mr. T. H. Fleming occupying tho chair. Tliero were also present: Messrs. H. ip. Von Haast, W. H. Quick, A. It. Meek, C, Wilson, ]?, P. Wilsou, and Dr. .Knight. 'Tho balance in tho bank was stated to be £1780 10s., and on tho laboratory account £45 3s. 3d. The, payments passed werq £703 18s, 9d. A letter was rccoived from Lord Rayleigh, Chancellor of the Cambridge University, regarding tho celebration of tho centenary of the birth of Chas. Darwin, on June 22, 23,' and 24, 1909, and inviting tho council to send a dolegato. Mr. P. W. Robertson, Rhodos scholar, was appointed. Professor Kirk advised the council that Dr. Pomare had presented a set of casts of tho brain tq the incipient comparative anatomy museum of tho collogo. A voto of thanks was accorded the donor. It was docidcd to grant applications from Susanna M. Hopkirk and Normnn M. Paul-* sen, at the Dannevirke High S.chool, for extension of tho junior Queen's scholarships ta the year 1909.
The recently amalgamated Mutual Life and Citizens' Assurance Co. is now doing business. Policyholders in this company are stated to hnvp the* security afforded by a board of trustees appointed from themselves, and wlioaa (luties " are the interest of ordinary branch policyholders, and report annually 'to them. The business of the company is divided into two branches—ordinary and industrial. Tho industrial branch comprises thoso policies under which premiums are payable weekly in advance, and are collected as far as practicable at tlio homos of the assured. The following resolution was carried unanimously on Monday night at the meeting of the Hutt No-License executive, being moved by Mr. Townsend, the secretary:—"This meeting, having learnt of the i.umerous reports that are being circulated, wishes to point out that a local option poll will be held at tho general elections, whether tho rarliumentary seat is contested or not. Fifty per cent, of the total number of voters must voto to mako tho poll valid. It is also the intention of tho executive to keep tho No-Liccnsc issuo free from any political party." A meoting of the New Zealand Wallace Testimonial Conunitteo was hold last night at tho rooms of Messrs. Thomson and Brown. There was a largo attendance, and Mr. W. Ooffoy occupied tho ohair. An apology for absence was received from Mr. f\. M. B. Fishor, M.P. Tho troasnror announced that he had received a chcque for £5 from a well-known admirer of Mr. W. Wallace, who takes a very keen interest in all kinds of spoft, and particularly football in Wellington. A final appeal will be niado with tho aid of tho collcction boxes on Saturday next, the /vision of tho Wollington-Otago match,
