The Avondalo Jockey Club are only going to charge bookmakers 10 guineas a day to bet at tho cup meeting, which commences on Saturday. At a meeting of stowards of the AshhurstPohangina Racing Club, held last week, tho following appointments wero made for tho annual raco meeting: — Judge, Mr. W. H. Hartgill; handicappcr, Mr. J. Henrys; starterj Mr. A. Keith; timekeeper, Mr. 11. Stevens; clerk of scales, Mr. T. The services of Kileheran havo been eagerly sought by breeders this , season, so that there are now only three or four vacancies for outside mares on the importod horse's list. , • Bookmakers wishing to ply their calling at the Wanganui Jockey Club's spring meeting must apply for licenses not later than Tuesday, September 22. The Merriwee mare Waddy will not be a. starter .in the Maiden Race at Bulls to-day. Leonator, who is engaged in the Avondalo Cup on Saturday, is doing good work on tho tracks in Auckland. . The last time the Leolantis gelding started was at the Fleet meeting last month, .when ho won tho Roosevelt Handicap. . On the first day of the. Australian Jockey Club's spring meeting, Aeolus has been entered for the Hurdle Race, Artillerio for- tho Trial Stakes, and Cross Battery and Waipuna, for tho Spring Stakes.

Overtime, who won a race at the AVanganui Hunt Club meeting and: afterwards competed unsuccessfully at Marton, has gouo soro, and is being treated to a short spell.

Tho two-year-old Bliss (Stepiak—Faraway), which was purchased by Mr. Geo. Hunter at the Yaldliurst sale last month, lias gone amiss in her work at Hastings, and is to bo turned out for some'timo; J

The Ashhurst Cup will this season be worth 500 sovs., and the two'other open events at the same meeting will each bo worth 200 sovs.

The Auckland "Star" states that the owners of Cachuca have been advised by Trainer M'Grath that Cachuca hasv gone seriously amiss in Sydney, and will have to bo given a lengthy spell.

Tlio White Knight and Radium will probably fight their battles over again in the Cesarewitch Stakes next month, but Torpoint,, who split the pair at the finish of tho Goodwcod Cup, has not b,oen entered for tho ovent. Should, Tho White .'Knight start in, tho Cesarewitch, it v,'ill probably be his last race. For. his first season at the stud his list is already full. „

Sea King created a very- favourable impression shortly after arriving at Randwick by spurting oyer half a mile in brilliant fashion. Should .lie win n decent raco in Australia it will be a useful 'advertisement for' his sire Saut Ilario, which was recently purchased by Mr. James Thompson, of New South Wales. • '

Owing, principally to the phenomenal success of, 'the three-year-old, Your Majesty, Persimmon will head the list of winning sires in England this season. ; ,

Tho New Zealand-bred Pink Un has won a race, in Australia at last. At Caulfield, on September 5, he started second favourite in the Memsio Stakes, on milo and a furlong, and won by a length from Knox. Another New Zealand-bred hdrse in Peterhof started favourite and finished third. Since winning Pink Un has come into tho betting for the Caulfield Cup.

Dividend, who beat Poseidon in the Champion Stakes the season before last; broke down badly in a race at 'Caulfield last Saturday week, and it is understood that his racing days are over. As a yearling' Dividend was bought for 220 guineas, and during his racing career lie won among other, races the A.J.C. St. Lcger, the Champion Stakes twice, and tho Cumberland Stakes.

Duart is engaged in two races at the Avondale meeting on Saturday, and he.will probably be opposed to Naumai in the four-furlong-race. When tho going is hard Duart is a .very fast beginner, and it will be interesting to see if lie can keep pace with tho Conqueror gelding on Saturday.

It has often been, said that jockeys aro the' same all tho world over, and though this may not be strictly true it would appear as if the English jockeys aro in some respects like tho'se in the Dominion. At the Brighton meeting in August one of tho horses in tho Marine Plato was knocked down during tho running of the /race, and 'Walter Griggs, rider of the winner, was disqualified for foul riding. In discussing tho matter, tho London "Sportsman", said:—"The stewards aro to bo complimented on their prompt action and decision, for there can be no more serious offence in racing than foul; riding. On the other hand, 110 word of compliment can be recorded for tho other joekoys concerned, for though they made a rare row in their dressingroom none was bold enough to make formal complaint." In New Zealand it is not often that 0110 hears of a-jockoy laying a complaint against another, for foul riding, but wo occasionally hear of old scores being wiped out during the running of races. AVONDALE JOCKEY CLUB'S AC. CEPTANCEB. .
