•MASTERTON.
Tho Rev. L. M. Isitt, the well-known .temperance, iccturor,. was to havo addressed a No-License meeting on Monday night at Alfiedton, but missed his engagement through mishaps with the automobile which was conveying tho reverend gentleman to his destination. The first misadventure was caused through tho car .floundering into a deep liolo and rolling over, after its driver had been advised by a roadman to take a new track. In order •to ■ ma.ke up for tho lost time, tho party scorched, with the result that thero was a heated wheel. This trouble was overcome only in time to grapplo with tho difficulty of two badly punctured tiros, one following the other, then a cylinder blew out, and the mud and oil-bespattered travellers had furtherj oxorciso in the task of hauling the derelict car up a steep hill into Eketaliuna, where.the journey was abandoned, and tho adventurers returned to Masterton by the train; ' ■ . . , \
Mr. 11. Burgess, ' tho newly-elected secretary of the local Y.M.C.A. branch, was welcomed last'night-by a largo gathering, which included-the Revs. EI. Watson, A. T. Thompson, A. Hodge, ,J. N. Buttle, and Messrs. P. L. Rollings and A. Hondry, all of whom delivered speechos. The evening closed with harmony.
Mr. Timothy Clancy, well kuown in sporting circles, died in the Masterton Hospital on Monday night, through an internal injury sustained whilo riding on hofseback. Ho leaves a widow and'ono'son.
Mr. T. A.' Weston, formerly of Carterton, but now residing at Hastwell, is leaving that district permanently for Taranaki.
FEILDING.
Rain sot in last night, and the outlook is ; not too promising for the excursion of Foilding farmers to tho State Farm at Levin today. If the wea.thor is at all suitable thero will bo soveral hundred persons in tho party. The plans of the now courtJiouso for Feilding are open for inspection at tho courthouse. -Tho.building is to bo of brick, with the regulation front elevation. Tho courtroom has the us»il space reserved for tho public, and a good floor space for tho legal fraternity, the- officers of tho Court, and the Bench, with the .necessary'dock oil the lefthand sido of the room.
The annual ball of tho Court Loyal Lodge, Halcombe, was largely attended. There wero some thirty-five couplcs present.
Mr. P. Desmond, son of Mr. M. Desmond, of Kimbolton Road, has been appointed to a position in tho. Land Transfer offico at Blenheim." ■ '
The following are tho results of the musical knowledge examinations held in Feilding in "Juno last in connection with tho Trinity College of Music: —Junior: Nellie Fisher, 99 (honours); Thelma Fisher, 97 (honours); May Ryan, 96, (honours); Gladys Wells, 80 (honours). They were all pupils of the Sisters of St. Joseph's Convent, Feilding. At tho monthly meeting of. tho managers of the Feilding Presbyterian Church, held on Monday .nightj a letter was read from Mr. E. J.. Wackrill, one of tho managers and treasurer of the.church, in which ho stated that the precarious condition of his health made it imperative that ho should resign. Mr. K. Bartholomew was appointed treasurer. The Feilding Gas Company having acquired fresh capital has gono in for a forward policy. The work now in hand includes the extension and enlargement of the mains.
CARTERTON
•Farmers'are congratulating themselves on the fine'warm rain that was falling yesterday. As there'is no wind the greatest bonefit will be derived, 'though floods aro feared on loiy-lying grounds. The Military School of Instruction was opened in the Drillshed on Monjlay evening by Staff-Sergeant-Major M'Nair, by a lecturo on ! 'Musketry."- There was a largo attendance. .
EKETAHUNA
Mr. J. J. Meade, builder, met with a painful accident yesterday morning. While working at some machinery, his fingers became entangled, with „. the result that the index and second fingers wero almost severed, arid it is feared that lie will loso both. Ho was sent to Masterton Hospital. The Eketahuna Borough Council dccided at its meeting on Monday night not to celebrate
the anniversary. of Dominion Day, for the reason that already there wero too many holidays.
The County , Council resolved at its monthly meeting 'to send a' congratulatory letter to the Prime Minister on the decision to introduce model by-laws this session, and will urge upon him the necessity of passing them into law in order to obviate the costly and recurring litigation which existing conditions give rise to.
The proposed water and drainage scheme in Eketahuna Borough is hampered owing to tho inability' of the council to secure a definite answer from tho Government whether it will advance the money.
FEATHEItSTOK
A Presbyterian Church bazaar is being organised in-aid of the manso funds, and is to bo held early in October. On Thursday the ladies, and on Saturday tho men, play.thoir third cleek competition, under tlio auspices of tho Golf Club.
