1 ~ OPPOSITION CANDIDATE AT I'AHIATUA. (Br TELEGIUriI—ritESS ASSOCIATION.) • Pahiatua, September 15. Mr. Cooper, Opposition candidate for Pahiatua, delivered his opening address hero last night beforo an audienco of about 300. The -Mayor presided. Tho caudidate, who spoke for an hour and a half, inet with a good reception. The principal planks of hia platform aro:—More progressive land settlement; the system of freehold tcnuro; economical administration; reform of local government with a view of abolishing to a largo extent -the Public Works Department and vesting many of its powers in the local bodies; taxation through Customs for revouuo purposes only; reform of the labour laws, and encouragement of individuality as against Socialism. Tho candidate was aocorded a hearty vote of thanks. THE OROUA SEAT. (BT TEt.EGBA.rn. —SIT-CIAI COKUESFON»ENT.J Feilding, September 15. A complimentary social was tendered to Mr. R. E. Ilornblow, the Independent Liberal candidate for Oroua, by his supporters last night, and was a great success, the Drill Hall . being packed. Appropriate speeches were dolivered by several prominent electors, accompanied by a gift of a gold watch and chain. The candidate, in replying, met. with an enthusiastic reception.. Fully live hundred persons sat.down to supper. TAUMAEUNUI. Mr.'R. Dawson Moore, who has been mentioned as a. candidate for tho Taumarunui seat, writes to inform us that he lias decided to stand down, ill favour of Mr. W. T. Jennings, M.P. Tho Labour Representation Committee, which comprises delegates from the Political Labour League and from !!'.: 'y-thtee trades unions, will meet this evcn.ny for the purposo of selecting candidates to contest three seats —Wellington East, AVollington Suburbs, and Wellington South—at the general elections.
