MR. M'LEAN AND THE PRESS.
« THE SECOND BALLOT.' Tho Second Ballot Bill and its "gag" clauses wcro referred to by Mr. W. M'Lean, who is standing for the_ Wellington . East seat, at Roseneath last night. The speaker said that ho hailed the advent of as many candidates as cared to come out. Thero had been, ho continued, a serious flaw in making an attempt to gag, the candidates and the press. There was 110 reason why this should bo so. If the candidates who wcro left wcro unable to speak it would bo unfortunate, as tho .people requiredd to hoar tliom. Even if tho candidate was barred, there was no reason to gag tho press. The press was tho greatest educator of the prosent day, and there was 110 reason to limit its action. Tho Government had mado a mistake, but he thought there was 110 intention to gag the press.
