LEVIN NEWSPAPER CASE.
0 CUT TEI.KGItAPIt. —SrF.CIAt. COItRF.SFONDENT.I Palmerston North, September 15. At the Supreme Court this morning, in the case, D. S. Papworth v. the Horowhenua Publishing Co., Ltd., a claim for (a) £500 damages, (b) £177 6s. unpaid salary, and (c) £150' money advanced with interest at 6 per cent., camo before Mr. Justice Chapman and a jury. Considerable interest was .manifested, and about twenty witnesses were subpoenaed. Mr. Myers, instructed by Mr. Jackson, appeared for plaintiff, and Mr. D. M. Findlay, instructed by Mr. Park, for the defendant company. Eudence was given by plaintiff as fo his alleged wrongful dismissal as editor, manager, and reporter, .the agreement ong'iialh boing for three years, and only nine m.-m'iis having oxpired. . Plaintiff stated that he had received no paymont of salary sinco ftnvomber, and had lent the company the amount forth. Defendants, in their statement, alleged incompetency and loss as a result .of lax administration of their affairs, averring tlint llio dismissal was justified by reason of tho continued breaches by plaintiff of tho terms of agreement. Evidence was given by N. Aian Grant ,(an ,'rstwhile employee of tho company), A. C. Copping (manager of the' Stratford "Post"), and'.W. H. Hawkins-,(lato of the "Pahiat'ua Herald") supporting plaintiff's .claim to competency and general administration of tho company's affairs. The case was adjourned at five o!clock until to-day.
