Carroll (Minister for Native Affairs) as the candidate to recoive its support at the election for tho Gisborno constituency. THE EDEN SEAT. Auckland, September 14. Mr. J. W. Shackelford, Government candidate for the Eden seat, addressed his first meeting of olectors at Avondplo on Saturday. He expressed general approval of tho present Administration, and was accorded a voto of thanks. 1 ' HURUNUI. Christchurch, September 14. Mr.' Geo. T. Pulley, candidate for the Hurunui seat, addressed a meeting of electors at Ashley on Saturday night. Ho announced himself as a supporter of tho present Government, On tho liquor question, ho said the "trado" should be undor State control, and " shouting" should be mado illegal. He added ho was a Protectionist, and believed in protecting tho farmers, tho mainstay of tho country. The Government should not allow wheat to come iuto tho country under 4s. a bushel. Ho was opposed to Bible-reading 'in schools, also to tho ropeal of the Arbitration Act. The candidate was accorded a vote 'of thanks. BRUCE.' / Dunetiin, September 14. Requisitions bearing over 550 signatures have been presented to Mr. J. ,London asking him_ to contest the Bruce seat in the Liberal interest at) the general election. Mr, London is conferring with friends in both Taieri and' Bruco electorates, and will probably arrive'at a decision in a few days, Members of. the Lawrence Liberal Federation, along with delegates from Bluo Spur and Evans Flat branches, selected Mr. A. W, Tyndalle, of Blue Spur, as candidate for tho Bruoe seat. MR. J.'E. FITZGERALD AT ISLAND - . BAY. Mr. J. E. Fitzgerald, candidate for the Suburbs seat at the general election, addressed a meeting of some 200 electors at ■Island Bay last night. Mr. H. J. Leppor occupied the chair. Tho speaker's address was 011 the-same lines as those delivered at previous meetings, but ho devoted special attention to tho Conciliation and Arbitration Act. At tho conclusion of his speech, Mr. Fitzgerald answered several questions, and was accorded a hearty vote of thanks, Mr. proposing and Sir, G. A. Standhopo seconding it. A strong committee was then sot up to further the candidate's interests. WELLINGTON SUBURBS. Dr. Newman is to bo asked .to contest tho Suburbs-seat against Messrs. Fitzgerald and Lulco,' who have \alroady announced themselves as Government, candidates. -Dr. Newman is at present absent from' Wellington, but on his return a requisition will bo presented to him on tho subject, and it is hoped, to Becure his assent.
