John Campbell,., aged 16, was killed in tho bush at Marua this.morning by-a trco-fall-ing on him. - ACCIDENT TO A RIDER. ' (BX TELEGRAPH. —SPECIAL COIiRESPONDEtfT.J Auckland) September 14. : ■ A point-to-point steeplechase of the Pakuranga Hunt Club on Saturday was considerably marred by a serious accident during a light-weight jumping race. The course for tho_ event was a cross-country one,.,and .part of it consisted of a run down a father' steep incline to a stono wall jump at tho bottom. As the two leading horses cleared the 'wire fence at the top .of tho hill it was'seeii'tliat tho bit was out of the mouth of Laddie, who was ridden-by Mr.- Frank-Selby, son of Mr. A. Selby,-who-is prominently-identified with tho club;. • .The horse.- .practically freo. from control, came .down-.tho hill at a tremendous pace, but staggered and fell'as he cleared the jump, arid shot his rider over his head. Mr. Selby fell- face downwards with tho bridle clenched in his hand, and lay motionless while the horse, freed from his gear, gained his feet, and galloped-.off after the leader. Mr. Selby was unconscious when picked up, and a messenger was 'hastily dispatched in a" motor-car to Otahuhu, -iho nearest township,- for a medical man.'- ; 'Ho returned,' with ,Dr. Rowley, of Otahuhu, arid Dr. Scott, of Onehunga, who mado a careful examination of the injured man arid&scei--tained that he was'suffering from concussion of the brain. Mr. Selby, who showe'd not the' slightest sign of returning consciousness, was conveyed to - his parents' resident}, at Otahuhu in a cab. He did not regain: consciousness till Sunday. Wilkinson, whilst playing football for the Union Company against the Combined Shipping Companies last Saturday, had his right leg broken just above the anklj A married man named Thos. Joliftston, 40 years of ago, a resident of Horner Street, had his left leg'broken above the kn6B yesterday through a stone falling on he was working at the Public Trust building. -
